Pennsic XXXIX 2010

Just a few highlights from a hot, muggy, yet successful war for Septentria and Ealdormere:

For the first time ever, the Ealdormerian Unbelt team did not have a losing record in the Unbelt tourney, winning 3 and losing 3.  This was in part due to the leadership of THL Baldric, who was surprised after the tourney to be placed on vigil for the Order of Chivalry.  Earl Syr David, his knight, had made the trip especially to do this deed and had been stealthily avoiding his squire up until that point lest he catch on that something was afoot. 

Once again, Septentria provided all the archers for the Archer Champions’ team for Ealdormere. THL Dafydd, Lord Brendan, Baroness Anne, Lady Mahhild, and Magistra Nicolaa all braved the long walk out in the early morning and the oppressive heat to represent their Kingdom.  It should also be mentioned that Her Majesty Dagmar shot the best-ever War Point shoot by a sitting Ealdormerian monarch.  Wassail to Her Majesty!

Besides the Septentrian honours distributed in Baronial Court, Septentrian Lord Breka fra Etain was awarded a Scarlet Banner in Kingdom court.

War of the Trillium 2010

For the second time, War of the Trillium featured an Olympics competition, complete with gold, silver, and bronze medals for the winners.  A wide variety of competitions took place in armoured and rapier combat, archery, thrown weapons, and the arts and sciences.  This year the weather was outstanding for the entire event.

Several pieces of business were transacted in Septentrian Court.  First, Lord Thorolfr inn Smithr stepped down as Baronial A&S minister and his replacement, Lady Mahhild de Valognes, officially began her term. Lord William of Otterton (aka Griffin), the Baronial Pursuivant, passed on his tabard to Lady Bethoc.  As he had promised at Pikeman’s, he then took up the sword as Their Excellencies’ Rapier Champion.  Finally, the White Bear Fian was called forward.  His Excellency Percival pointed out that there had been no challenges since Lord Rattanicus’ successful challenge some time ago, and that since a challenger was needed he would step forward to challenge into the Fian.  The date and location of the challenge has not yet been set, but the challenge received a hearty cheer from the crowd.

The weekend concluded with a toga party, where Senex Crepitus set up the altar of Jupiter Optimus Maximus for various initiation rituals involving flaming Sambuco. For those not inclined towards burning alcohol, the podium from the Olympics was set alight in the field outside the pavilion and many gathered around it to hear stories and tales. 

Pennsic War XXXVII 2008

Septentria had a very successful Pennsic this year. THL Wat, Lord Thorolf, Baron Luke, Lady (now Baroness) Dagmar, Lord Bjarn, and Lord Steonwold were all members of the Unbelted Champions’ Team.  Five Septentrians were selected for the Archer Champions’ Team:  THL Dafydd, Lady Mahhild, Baron Percival, Magistra Nicolaa, and Lord Brendan.  THL Gareth represented Ealdormere in the Fencing Champions’ tourney and won his bout, while THL Daniel of Whitby won the Knife competition at the Known World Thrown Weapons tourney and finished second overall.

Early on the week, two Septentrians were singled out for particular honours by Their Majesties:  Lady Dagmar was made a Baroness of the Court for her service during several reigns, and THL Wat of Sarum was put on vigil for the Order of the Chivalry.  His elevation will take place later in the fall.

As has become traditional, TE Percival and Christiana treated the Barony to a Barbeque, again hosted by the Canton of Eoforwic just below the Runestone.   They availed themselves of the opportunity to hold Court once everyone was well fed.  Lady Eithne Briansdottir passed her hereditary Osis ring to Lady Anneke, while Lord Grom passed his on to Bleddyn, one of Eoforwic’s newest fighters.  Lady Marsali was given the Golden Bear for her skill in needlework and costuming, while Lady Alof received a Golden Bear for her Norse clothing, especially its embroidery.  Lord Brendan was called forward, and Their Excellencies noted his excellent service as an Archer Champion - but for the final two shoots, he had shot for the wrong kingdom.  However, stated the Baron, he was only being called forward at this time to receive the Bronze Medal for archery that he had earned at Trillium War.

Master Hector conducted two pieces of business in Court.  The first was to recognize Baroness Cenedl as Heithr’s daughter (and thus his own granddaughter) for the spirit she has brought to Ramshaven.  The second was to take Lord Grom of Eoforwic as his protégé.  Lord Grom was presented with a yellow baldric. 

Their Excellencies then called forward Lord Hans Thovaldsson and thanked him and House Marchmount (as well as all of Eoforwic) for their hospitality in once again hosting and cooking for the barbeque.

Their Excellencies noted that there had not yet been any nominations for the Brass Balls of Septentria, and closed their Court.  However, Lord Brendan was commended vocally for that dubious honour by the audience, so Court was reopened so he could be duly recognized.

During Kingdom Court, several Septentrians were again singled out for honours.  The Cantons of Monadh and Eoforwic were given the honour of carrying their banners in the procession for their generous donations to kingdom beautification.  Countess Domhnail was part of a team added to the Scroll of Honour for “Squashing the Eastern Army like bugs” during the Bridge Battle.  Lady Mahhild de Valognes was given the Award of the Orion for her skills in making clothing, while Baron Cynred was given a Maiden’s Heart for his extensive service over many hears.  Lady Bethoc ingen MaelFechin Fynletyr, who was not present at Pennsic this year, was given the Maiden’s Heart for her service to the Chirugeonate, specifically at Pennsic.

War of the Trillium IV 2008

This year’s War of the Trillium had a timely theme:  Ealdormere’s first-ever Olympic Games.  A variety of competitions were held in all of the martial arts and in the arts and sciences, with incredibly spiffy gold, silver, and bronze medals going to the victors.  Each Barony was asked to provide a “national anthem” that could be played while the baronial banner of the gold medal winners was raised.  Septentria opted for her traditional battle song (written by Mistress Rhiannon).  The anthem was heard many times, as Septentria triumphed in the overall competition.  The complete list of scores and medal winners follows this report.

A short Baronial Court was held before TRM Rustique and Aaron held their court.  Baron Percival and Baroness Christiana first recognized the cooperation between the Baronies in the armoured combat melees that had taken place earlier in the day which had ensured that all the baronies could field teams. The next order of business was to formally invest Lord Bjarn Thorolfsson with his tabard as Baronial Warlord at Pennsic this year.  Finally, Eoforwic presented 150 Septentrian bear badges to Their Excellencies in payment of the “extra” tax revolt taxes.

In Kingdom Court, Eoforwic presented 50 Trillium tabards  in response to Queen Rustique’s Ealdormere beautification challenge.  Lord Michael of Brentwood was commended by the Chirurgeonate for his emergency services.  Mistress Keja presented rings to Baroness Cennedl and THL Jhone of Woodcote for their inspiration.  Master Gaerred, at his last Ealdormerian event, presented the profits from the Raven Pub at Crown Tourney, as well as a collection of CDs by Marian and Hector, all to benefit the travel fund.

Many Septentrians were recognized with awards in Court. Lady Marasali and Lady Tarian both received Maiden’s Hearts, as did former Septentrian Lord Wulfgang Donnerfaust.  Lady Anneke the Furious was given the Orion for her embroidery work while Lord Grom of Eoforwic was given the Scarlet Banner for his skill in thrown weapons. Also receiving a Scarlet Banner, for his skill and enthusiasm in promoting archery, was Lord Michael of Brentwood.  Finally, Lady Medb ingen Dungaile was made a Companion of the Order of the Crucible for her many skills, including research, cookery, sprang, needlework, and beadwork.

Sunday saw the semi-annual Kingdom Moot take place.  There was a great deal of discussion around awards for children in Ealdormere and whether or not more were needed. There were a wide variety of opinions on all sides of the issue, but consensus was reached that encouraging Ealdormere’s young people to form a council and discuss what they would like to see would be an excellent next step.  The second major topic was around whether or not there should be authorizations for archery.  The archery marshals attending were of the opinion that these were not needed as they control the line and are responsible for shooters.  The topic of award recommendations was also raised, partially as a result of the discussion on children’s awards. 

Several who had sat the thrones previously or who were currently reigning emphasized that they do not get enough award recommendations and that anyone can recommend anyone for any award, including Peerages.

Pennsic XXXVIII 2009

The story at Pennsic this year could have easily been the weather. The first week featured frequent cloudbursts that had rendered the parking areas and roads a muddy morass by the middle weekend.  Opening Ceremonies was actually moved to the barn because the field was so slippery, and parking enforcement was even stopped temporarily.  However, except for some overnight rain early in the week, the rest of the War featured ideal weather—sunny with moderate temperatures. Only on the final Saturday did rains finally make a return.

Pennsic XXXVIII will be remembered as the year with two wars in one—and Ealdormere was on the winning side both times.  The first conflict consisted of East and allies vs. Middle and allies, and with sides very closely matched, the East was victorious.   The second War was East and Middle vs. the Known World.  Again, in a close matchup, the Known World was the victor.  Of particular note was Ealdormere’s performance in the first two field battles, where at the end a number of Ealdormerians, including His Excellency Percival, walked off the field still alive.  Also, after the battles on Monday, Count Etian, Sir Evander and Countess Domhnail were added to the Scroll of Honour for their leadership on the field.  On that day, a boon was begged by Master Ruslan of the East Kingdom, and the next day Ealdormere gained its second female member of the Order of the Chivalry when Countess Kaylah was made a Lady Master on the field between the second and third field battles.

Septentria made an outstanding showing in Thrown Weapons this year, with Lady Catriona winning two tournaments.  Septentria also provided Ealdormere’s only participant in Archer Champions, THL Dafydd. 

The Roaming Roman party, now in its second year, was a rousing success, as the Romans managed to thwart a number of Celts intent on stealing Senex Crepitus’ banners. Senex Crepitus also made an appearance at the camp of Caesar later in the week to answer charges of wearing confusing headgear, false advertising, and “TBD”.  After a spirited defense by Viscountess Moria, intense consultations with Caesar, consumption of snack packs and Limoncello, confusing Latin phrases, and copious use of the words “Hail Caesar!” Baron Footus was acquitted of all charges.

Septentrian Court was held in Eoforwic’s camp, as has become traditional, and Lord Hans and House Marchmount once again provided the refreshments. Many stopped to marvel at the amazing solar powered two-tap drink cooler that was the focal point of the Eoforwic common tent.  Lord Hans was presented with the Baron and Baroness’ personal favour as well as an apron for his services.  Lord Thorolf was presented with a Bear’s Claw. The court was interrupted by a certain “Olympic Committee”, which presented  Lady Jocelyn with her “medal” (a crushed pop can) for “fastest 100 yard trash run.”   Later in the same court, she was taken as apprentice/protégé by Baroness Nicolaa.

Several hereditary arm rings were also passed on, before the traditional presentation of the Brass Balls of Septentria. Baron Percival presented them to Thorolfr for leading a can-can line on the last day of battle, but then he turned around, stated that “a great injustice had been done,” and called the armed might of Septentria forward. Lord Bjarn than spoke to the “brass balls” it had taken His Excellency to authorize and fight at Pennsic, and presented the Balls back to Baron Percival.  His Excellency was then mobbed by a group hug.   Master Hector then came forward to proclaim His Excellency as of the same blood of Aedan o Kincorra, Aedenesbrother.  Just as the court closed, Their Majesties hijacked the Baronial chairs to open their own Court and create Anne Tinker and Tiberius of Warwickshire as Court Barons. Beautiful stained-glass scrolls by THL Tarian were presented to their new Excellencies.

Just before the guests departed, two other things of note occurred. First, Viscountess Moria took Lady Catriona as her protégé and Countess Rylyn did the same with Lady Anneke. Second,  Lord Bjarn was serenaded with Pennsic Christmas carols. This was the final act of several deeds coordinated by Lady Jocelyn to give Bjarn Christmas at Pennsic. After he had departed for the Roman party on Monday, Lady Jocelyn and Baroness Nicolaa decorated his tent with a Christmas tree from Lady Catriona, ornaments from Countess Domhnaill, Thor’s Hammer gingerbread cookies by THL Asa,  twinking lights from Lady Jocelyn, and a stocking sewn by Asa and stocked with Viking toys (including beer, foam axes, duct tape, toy rhinos, and a complete set of “Viking” action figures) by Nicolaa. The carols were courtesy of  THL Asa and Lord Gunther.

Septentrians recognized at Kingdom Court included Baron Foote and Baroness Grainne, presented with Maiden’s Hearts for their fundraising work for Barony and Kingdom as well as their support of Pennsic fun.   Lord Bjarn’s auspicious week continued as he was made a Companion of the Order of Thorbjorn’s hammer and presented with a scroll in the form of an axe.  The culmination was the elevation of Baroness Gaerwen to the Order of the Laurel. Nine spoke on her behalf,including His Majesty Roak, Master Hector, Baroness Aibhilin and Baron Oakhammer, Duchess Rustique, Baron James, Baroness Kaiza, Baroness Nicolaa, Fred the Illegitimate from the swamp, and Baron Cynred.  After these words she was invested with the ring of the Order and presented with medallion and cloak.  Congratulations to Septentria’s newest Laurel!

As has become traditional, many Ealdormerians gathered at the water’s edge on Thursday night for the boat burning. This year, the boat was named in memory of Mistress Etaoin, who passed away earlier this year. This has been a hard year for many Septentrians in the loss of both friends and family members. Lady Mary Hannah’s flute playing added a note of gentle calm to the ceremonies, allowing all to remember those who had passed. The boat tried its hardest to cling to the shoreline, but was carried to the centre of the pond by a Trimarian pirate who braved the waters of Cooper’s Lake.  

War of the Trillium V 2009

Trillium War, as usual, featured plenty of archery, thrown weapons, rapier, and armoured combat as Ealdormere’s martial forces prepared for the upcoming Pennsic campaigns. Baron Percival was an enthusiastic participant as a fighter this year.

Another highlight was beadmaking, hosted by members of DARC, featuring an oven built onsite.

Court at War of the Trillium was particularly eventful this year (and not just because the King kept making ladies cry.)   

Septentrian court featured the awarding of a Bear’s Heart to Lord Gunther for his work on the Ursus, as an archery supporter, and for Eoforwic.  He was later presented with his Scarlet Banner in Kingdom Court, which consisted of a large runestone rock that Nicolaa had completed almost under his nose, but since the inscription was in runic he had had no idea it was for him.  Before that several other Septentrians received AoAs—Lady Bridget (who plays in both Eoforwic and Vest Yorvik), and Lord Maeryk and Lady Brynne.  Lady Ysabeau Herbier de Vauvert received a Maiden’s Heart for many years’ work in Eoforwic, particularly as a merchant liaison.  Baroness Dagmar Halvdan was called forward for recognition on the Scroll of Honour for her fundraising work against cancer.

The Order of the Crucible was then called forward and THL Dafydd ap Sion was inducted for his extensive research into historical archery (particularly the Mary Rose finds).  The Order of Thorbjorn’s Hammer was then called forward to add its newest (and youngest) member, Lord Quilliam. Another new Honourable Lord was also made that day: Streonwold Wulfesbana was honoured with a Grant of Arms.  He and his lady are the only Ealdormerians to be given bare Grants of Arms since we became a kingdom.

Lord Rhodri from Calontir was also added to the Scroll of Honour for his enthusiastic participation in the short time he was visiting Ealdormere.  

The “gotcha” awards continued as Baroness Xristinia was given an Augmentation of Arms.  Baron Brand was then called forward to do a presentation, which consisted of him hijacking Court as herald to call forward Magistra Nicolaa, who was then made a Baroness of the Court.

Princess Adrielle then called forward two of her apprentices, Mahault and Mahhild, and chastised them for “going feral.”  She then asked AElfwyn to come forward and to bring up her apprentice Gaerwen, who was also implicated in the misbehaviour.  After Her Highness reprimanded Mahault and Mahhild by taking away their spoons, AElfwyn was left to deal with Gaerwen, who was now grovelling before Her Highness.  She explained there was only one way she knew to do so—and begged a boon to elevate Baroness Gaerwen to the Order of the Laurel.  The Order was called forward and the obviously stunned Gaerwen was brought before Their Majesties and charged to stand her vigil, for elevation at Pennsic.

The evening’s festivities concluded with a triple CD release party, celebrating new works by Dame Tsivia, THL Emer, and Mistress Marian.  Attendees enjoyed refreshments, several live performances, and Ealdormerian trivia quizzes with bags of loot as prizes.

Fall Coronation 2010

The canton of Petrea Thule hosted Coronation on a blustery late September Saturday at a new site in Lindsey.   Many gentles from around Ealdormere turned out to see Quilliam and Dagmar step down and the reign of TRM Etain and Valfreya begin, as well as the knighting ceremony of THL Baldric.  Their Majesties Quilliam and Dagmar began their last court by restating the addition to the Scroll of Honour for the youth combatants who represented Ealdormere at Pennsic.  Lady Rosalind Pax, who was not in attendance, was also added to the scroll of honour and gifted with a map on a hide of leather so that she might make her way back to Ealdormere.  An Award of Arms was given to Avelyn, a Scarlet Banner to Lord Bleddyn, and a Maiden’s Heart to Master Corwyn.  

At that point, the Order of the Chivalry was summoned to Court, and Earl Syr David restated the boon for his Squire Baldric. Baldric himself came into Court, led by his young sons and accompanied by his lady wife, to the sounds of “Born on the Listfield” (led by his squire brother Baron Cynred).  Many speakers spoke on his behalf, several noting his relationship with Baroness Fiona and how proud she would be on this day.  Earl Syr David held the sword with King Quilliam to dub Baldric a knight, and then his scroll—to the tune of “Born on the Listfield”, and beautifully limned by Baroness Rachael— was sung by Master Hector.

Queen Dagmar then bestowed her favour, a quill with runic inscriptions, on THL Liadin for her many skills; and King Quilliam likewise bestowed his favour on Countess Domhnail.  Their Majesties thanked many people, including the scribes of Ealdormere; Lady Ceridwyn, Duchess Rustique, and Lady Jocelyn (for their administrative/entourage help), Lord Thorolfr and Lord Grom for their heraldic assistance; and then finally released their Champions, THL Varenko and Berus Iarl.  

Finally the time came for Quilliam and Dagmar to depart in search of places to burn, things to pillage. As they did not wish to leave Ealdormere unprotected, they called forth Prince Etain and Princess Valfreya, who processed in together.   Quilliam was thus able to crown his “son” Etain, and then Dagmar presented the Queen’s crown to the new King, who crowned Queen Valfreya.

The day was full of fellowship and fun, including rapier and armoured tourneys, a largesse competition, and lots of good food. 

Evening court saw the recognition of County status for Quilliam and Dagmar.  Their scrolls were wrought in leather by Master Tarketai and Lady Lyda provided the text in Old Norse, which she read out in Court.  A few leftover fealties were taken care of (oathbreaking with the wrath of a thousand avenging angels), as well as some other pieces of business. Most noteworthy were the appointment of THL Bjarn as King’s Champion and Duke Aaron as Queen’s Champion.  As Sir Baldric is no longer qualified to head the Unbelt team, he passed those duties on to Baron Tiberius.   In all, an auspicious start to a new reign!

Icelandic Althing 2009

The last weekend of September saw the return of the Icelandic Althing event, sponsored by the Canton of Eoforwic and held on the property of Lord Graeme and Lady Aurelia in Orono, ON.  The first Althing had been held back in 1992 and had through the years reached semi-legendary status.  With the growth of Norse studies within Ealdormere, including two living history groups covering the period in question, Lord Gunther and Baroness Nicolaa decided that the timing was right to bring back the concept.

Although the Althing was not blessed with the beautiful weather from the previous week, Thor managed to keep the thunder and rain away long enough for a very successful event.  The highlight was the presence of in-depth living history displays by DARC and Regia Anglorum, taking the form of a street where craftsmen practiced their trades. Members of DARC demonstrated beadmaking, wood turning, pewter casting, blacksmithing, and cookery; Regia members were showing pottery, a warp weighted loom, and period poultry (among other activities).  The two groups also collaborated on a pit firing of pottery coordinated by Mistress Keja.  There was even a currency system allowing attendees to purchase items sold by the craftsmen.  

Two law cases were decided by the lawspeaker, Master Hector, and one of them led to a holmgang, fought on  3 metre by three metre cloak (as specified in the sagas).   Several Boat Battles (a variant of a bridge battle) were fought, followed by a holmgang tournament.  Archers enjoyed clout shoots and a duelling tree set up by Lord Michael of Brentwood, and a loot shoot provided by Baroness Nicolaa.  Thrown weapons was also available most of the day.  The day concluded with a hearty stew and bread provided by Orlaith and Ioseph from Eoforwic.

Their Majesties, resplendent in Norse clothing sewn by a team from Eoforwic, had a brief court and honoured two gentles of Eoforwic: Lucrece de Montsoreau was given the Award of Orion for her clothing research and construction, and Lord Hans Thorvaldsson was awarded the Maiden’s Heart for his work as baronial seneschal and “camp mom” for Eoforwic, including hosting Baronial Barbeques.

Later, Their Excellencies of Septentria held a brief court while the rains attempted to dampen the camp.  They awarded a Bear’s Claw to Lady Alof for her spear work and a Bear’s Heart to Lady Eithne Briansdottir  for help with the kids around camp and her general support of the Barony. They also presented Jacque de Sorde with baronial patches and a little bear token for his fighting spirit and his recent support of Septentrian events.  Based on the feedback from this event, it is Eoforwic’s intent to repeat it again in the future, perhaps in two years’ time.

Fall Coronation 2009

Their Graces Roak and Jocea completed their reign and Their Majesties Nigel and Adrielle began theirs on a sunny, warm day in late September.  The final court of Roak and Jocea included the awarding of a Maiden’s Heart to Michael of Brentwood, the naming of many scribes to the Scroll of Honour for their work during the reign, and the elevation of Odette de St. Remy to the Order of the Laurel.  They then departed, leaving the Crowns on the thrones.  After Berus Jarl and Count Etian called the Chivalry forward to protect the thrones until an Heir stepped forward, Sir Nigel came forward to claim the throne, reciting his lineage.  After his right to reign was confirmed, he heard the duties of a King and took up the Crown. Her Majesty Adrielle was crowned by her King after hearing her own duties. Their Majesties then swore an oath based on a Coronation oath of Edward II and gave their fealty to the Kingdom.  Each of the Peerage orders invested Their Majesties with one of the symbols of power—the Chivalry with the Sword, the Laurels with the Sceptre, and the Pelicans with Cloaks—when they came forward to swear their fealties.  Count Etian was also offered, and accepted, the position of Queen’s Champion after the Chivalry had sworn their fealty.  The court then continued with the fealties of territorial barons, Royal peers and great officers of state before closing until evening;  the populace was instructed to think about the meaning of the oath before coming forward later that day.

A Pas d’Armes then took place at a crossroads on the site, near where Their Majesties had pitched a tent with a viewing gallery.  His Majesty held the field with his company of tenans (who ranged in age and experience from Duke Eliahu to Lord Bleddyn) accepting challenges from those present. Particularly notable were the two Dukes from Drachenwald in their finery.  The event was marked by visitors from the Middle and other kingdoms near and far, as Their Majesties are well-travelled.  During a break in the fighting, His Majesty Nigel offered Baron Tiberius the position of King’s Champion, and he accepted. Nearby, an enthusiastic rapier list was also enjoying the fine day.

The feast was particularly remarkable.  Prepared by Baron Oakhammer and Baroness Aibhilin and their household and friends, every dish was cooked from period recipes—and every dish was tasty and served at an appropriate temperature in a timely manner. Only the fried Mars bars offered to Head Table diverged from this devotion to authenticity.

A second court was held in the evening.  Duchess Genevieve stepped down as Kingdom Seneschal, her replacement being Baron Corwyn.  Mistress AElfwyn also stepped down as Earl Marshal and Count Edward the Red assumed her duties. Their Majesties also accepted the fealties of the populace, presenting those who had sworn with rings to mark their status. Next, a writ was read bestowing the King’s and Queen’s Favours on the Kingdom of Calontir, who had pledged their troops directly to Their Majesties Nigel and Adrielle at Pennsic (before they had stepped up). The writ was also read out in Calontir court the same day by Lord Rhodri, who visited Ealdromere this past summer. Their Majesties also recognized the petition to retain Ealdormere citizenship by Mistress Eleanor Fairchild, who was attending the event, and Master Gaerred, who could not be there.  

A Volley of Arrows 2009

The weather was much more cooperative at Vest Yorvik’s archery-focused event on September 12, in its second year. Archers enjoyed clout shoots, an IKAC, a variety of fun shoots, and the woods shoot at the 3D target range (although initially the course was almost too challenging—the archers had been told to shoot from the marks used by compound shooters with laser sights).  A small number of fighters also used the day to good avail.  Their Highnesses spent the last weekend before their Coronation relaxing, shooting, getting fitted for clothing, and enjoying good company and entertainment.

Bowstrings and Tall Tales 2009

A small but dedicated group of archers and thrown weapons enthusiasts braved threatening weather for the traditional creative fun of this yearly event.  The highlight was the woods shoot, which featured a wide variety of challenging scenarios including shoots through castle windows,  an “immature wand” shoot through brush, and a swamp gas shoot. The course was made even more challenging by the torrential rain that broke out part of the way through the shoot.  Although the archers came back thoroughly soaked, a fun time was still had by all, and the lunch table put on by THL Melusine and the Bastille du Lac crew was worth the wait (and the yellow jackets thought so, too).

Feast of the Bear 2008

After a year’s hiatus, Eoforwic again hosted Feast of the Bear, this time in a new site, St. Simon’s church on Bloor St. in Toronto.  While nothing can replace the ambience of Casa Loma, in many ways this new site comes close, while providing amenities (such as heat, a collocated kitchen, sufficient electricity, and indoor washrooms) that the old Stables site lacked.  The main hall featured a soaring vaulted ceiling and a large, simple stained glass window, while the outdoor fighting area benefited from the church’s gothic-style architecture. There was also ample room for a variety of activities.

After a short morning court, THLord Wat of Sarum sat his vigil for the Order of the Chivalry in the upstairs choir loft, beautifully decorated by his friends.  An ample spread of food greeted his guests.

The large turnout of fighters (both armoured and rapier combatants) enjoyed several tourneys throughout the day.  The armoured combatants took part in a plunder tourney, where bouts were decided over various items of plunder.  A speed tourney also took place.  Later in the day,  Baron Percival (in armour) and Baroness Christiana witnessed the successful White Bear Fian challenge of Lord Rattanicus. Meanwhile rapier combatants amused themselves with a tourney in which they were both required to hang on to the ends of a rope while fighting.

Inside, Lord Gunnar treated attendees to a fabulous lunch table spread, with all proceeds benefiting the Eoforwic winter fight site.  Also benefiting the payment of rent on the fight site was a raffle organized by Lord Gunther Wahlstadt featuring a number of desirable items, including a hand-made knife and an armour grab bag.

A&S classes were organized by Viscountess Morgon.  Lady Helena taught knitting, THL Asa taught Lindesfarne-style illumination and Lady Lyda taught Runes. In the main hall, Lord Darius and Lady Lynette taught a large group a number of dances.  The children were not forgotten, with activities organized by Lady Eithne.

Court was held before feast.  TRM Etain and Valfreya gave leave to Baron Percival and Baroness Christiana to hold their court.  THL Berend van der Eych was called forward to receive his Crucible scroll, given in absentia during the previous reign. They recognized Lady Sara of Swordcliffe with a Bear’s Claw for her baking and cheesemaking at Pennsic, and then witnessed the transfer of the office of Mayor of the Royal City of Eoforwic from Lady Joscelyne to Lord Grom.  Magistra Nicolaa and the citizens then completed payment of Eoforwic’s baronial taxes by presenting the completed embroidered arms of Eoforwic.

After conducting some brief business that saw Bleddyn of Eoforwic receive his Award of Arms and Lady Alof of Eoforwic recognized with an Orion for her Norse clothing, Their Majesties then turned to the main business of the day, the elevation of THL Wat of Sarum to the Order of the Chivalry.  Having released his squire from fealty in the morning ceremony, Count Sir Cennedi opened the ceremony.  Baron Corwyn spoke for Wat as a Laurel, Baroness Adrielle as a Pelican, and Duke Aaron and Duchess Rustique as Royal Peers. The new knight was clad in a new shirt of mail before his lady Oksana girded him with two belts. Both spurs and a sword were also presented before His Majesty dubbed the new knight, who then chose to receive the buffet as a slap to the face (which resounded across the hall).  Sir Wat was then presented with his scroll -  a stained glass window made by Lady Tarian - before being greeted by his Order and the cheering populace.

The evening’s activities were topped by the feast prepared by Lord Ludwig.  The food was plentiful and tasty, inducing what one of the Royals termed a “food coma.” A particular highlight was the carving of the perfectly-done beef roasts by THL Naga, who first artfully tied back his sleeves before slicing two huge roasts into portions for every table, which were then served by Lord Mayor Grom. The lemon sorbet was another particular favourite.   He and his staff were recognized with a standing ovation from the Royals and all present.

Eoforwic received a great deal of praise on the beauty of this new site.   Mark your calendars - the next Feast of the Bear will take place May 2, 2009 (with an Icelandic Althing taking place in the fall of 2009.) 

Forecast for Hell: - 40 degrees (Huntsman’s Harvest 2008)

Who, may you ask, is the unknown fighter in the picture on p. 5 whose arms are not shown? Well believe it or not that shield bears the arms of none other than the Baron of Septentria, Percival de la Rocque. The pictures were taken at Huntsman's Harvest in Ben Dunfirth over the Thanksgiving weekend and depict Baron Percival fighting his authorization bout against Count Trumbrand the Wanderer. His Excellency Percival scored a killing thrust to win not only the bout but his Authorization in Sword & Shield and Dagger (Thrusting).

Following the discovery of some magical armour that offers protection to his less than healthy back and with the approval of his Barber Surgeon, Percival sought out and travelled to a Top Secret training facility hidden in the mountains to the west of Septentria and over this past summer has struggled to learn the skills needed to accomplish this goal. Septentria, Our lands are safe in the hands of a Baron who can lift sword to defend them should the need arise and our King call forth our troops to war 

The Coronation of Etain au Naval and Valfreya Greenspeare 2008

The March of St. Martins hosted the Coronation of Their Majesties Etain and Valfreya on a beautiful September day.  This group always comes up with clever site tokens, and this event was no exception—I don’t think I’ve ever received a pair of knitted slippers as a site token before.   Their Majesties Aaron and Rustique held their final court, which was marked by various functionaries falling over dead throughout.  Having “gotten the message”, they left in a hurry, leaving the crowns on the thrones and the Barons, Baronesses, and the baronial champions to guard the hall.  The wait was not long, however, as Etain strode forward and claimed the King’s crown for his own.  He then called forth his lady wife, Valfreya, to complete the transition.  During their first Court, TRM recognized five people who had been of great help to Her Majesty at Pennsic: Lord Streonwold Wulfesbana was recognized for his general support, and Lady Seonag NicThomais, Lady Rusulka Galbraith, Baroness Adrielle Kerrec, and Baroness Gaerwen were recognized for helping her when she suffered heatstroke on the field.

Volley of Arrows 2008

The Canton of Vest Yorvik hosted what will hopefully be the first of many events at the Archers of Caledon site. As the name suggests, the site is dedicated archery club featuring multiple ranges, including a huge Olympic-length range and two woods ranges. Archery marshal Lord Michael of Brentwood also brought along some additional butts and Percival’s pendulum to tempt shooters.  The only complaint about the site was that the club bans all crossbows, which meant that shooters who had only brought a crossbow were restricted to Lord Michael’s range.

The size of the site and the multiple ranges allowed one group to shoot an IKAC on the Olympic butts while teaching and shorter shoots took place on the other range. A small but dedicated group of fighters also turned out to spar;  even though this was an archery-focused event there was plenty of room for other activities.  Inside, the Bow Shop had set up a booth and was doing a brisk business selling archery supplies.  They also donated a bow and other equipment to Vest Yorvik for a raffle.

The highlight of the day for most was the chance to shoot the 3D range.  Thirty full-sized 3D animal targets were placed throughout the woods in a variety of challenging scenarios, including a panther on a tree log and a bear that had knocked over a garbage can.  The range and the targets themselves were beautifully maintained and very challenging, but hugely entertaining.  The woods shoot was won by _____

A second IKAC was arranged later in the day in order to provide more scores for Ealdormere in this yearly competition.  The overall IKAC was won by THL Dafydd ap Sion, with Lord Gunther Wahlstadt finishing second and Lord Brendan in third.

Cloth of Gold 2010

Cloth of Gold this year moved into larger quarters at the Blue Springs Scout Camp (home of several past Melees, FOOL, and Crown Tourneys), but was once again hosted by Eoforwic. Six teams entered this year including four with Septentrian representation:  A large Eoforwic team, the “DARC Side” team which was partially Septentrian, and the two one-person teams of Master Martin and THL Liadin.  This year there were several additional activities happening on Saturday as the teams finished up their entries, including an unbelt practice (which went ahead despite snow flurries) and the vigil and elevation of Mistress Keja to the Order of the Laurel.

The organizers declared two first place winners:  Eoforwic in the Advanced category for their Mary of Hapsburg gown, and Anneke’s team (Ramshaven #2) for their Finnish ensemble. Ramshaven #1’s Byzantine clothing was recognized as second place overall.  THL Liadin’s Norse ensemble was chosen as the Autocrats’ choice, and Master Martin’s Norse child’s clothing (and Liam, its incredibly cute model) as the contestants’ choice. 

Court was then held in which Orlaith and Iosef from Eoforwic both received AoAs and Anneke the Furious (one of the autocrats) her Maiden’s Heart.  Keja’s elevation took place in Russian style, with a procession including an icon, incense, a bell, and a banner.  She was accompanied by members of her family supporting her on each side.  As she made her oath, the bell rang with each promise, and she then swore a Russian fealty oath.  The elevation concluded with the reading of the scroll, worded based on period documents and wonderfully calligraphed and illuminated by THL Berend. 

Winter War 2009

As has become customary, Winter War was the first large event of the spring and the first chance for armoured combatants to begin to practice their melee skills for the upcoming warm weather campaigns.

Ten teams entered the melee round robin tourney.  Eight of these teams consisted of five unbelted fighters and two more were all-Chivalry teams of four fighters.  Three of the unbelt teams (Septentria-Bjarn, Septentria-Tiberius, and Skeldergate) were from Septentria, as well as one of the Chivalry teams (consisting of His Majesty Etian, Berus, Nigel, and Worgen).   Other teams included the second Chivalry team headed by His Highness Roak, two teams from Ramshaven, one from Ben Dunfirth, one from Trinovantia, and one from Rising Waters.

Commenting on the fighting, THL Justinian, who coordinated the tourneys, mentioned that all fought with chivalry and grace, with few harsh words in the midst of some very hard fighting.

The team commanded by Lord Bjarn was victorious in the round robin section, followed closely by THL Tiberius’ team.  The tourney was particularly remarkable for the appearance of Baron Percival in his first melee tourney.  His report is included below.

Another highlight was the squiring of THL Berend to Sir Nigel.  Berend is Nigel’s first squire, and the ceremony also marked the foundation of Nigel’s new household.  Their Majesties also made Guillaume, lord to Countess Jolecia (and as of very recently, her husband) a citizen of Ealdormere.  He went on to assist with the tourney, and will likely be seen frequently from now on.

Fighting was not the only attraction, however; Baroness Tsivia spent the day sitting her vigil for the Order of the Pelican.  THL Anne Tinker coordinated the vigil, including lovely food and special “mouchoir” attendants with tissues in case the vigilee happened to get teary-eyed. (They were needed a number of times during the day and during the subsequent ceremony itself).  A number of dignitaries from as far away as An Tir and Calontir made the journey to take part in Tsivia’s elevation, and she was showered by many fabulous gifts.

A large number of rapier fighters also turned out to play all day in a large list.  The Daughters of the North ran their yearly fundraising raffle.  A number of A&S classes were offered, and for much of the day, the band Talbot’s Cross provided live music to event-goers.

The highlight of Court was, of course, Tsivia’s elevation.  She processed down the aisle, resplendent in a red cotehardie, under a canopy of crossed banners held by members of the Chirugeonate.  Seven speakers spoke to the virtues of faith, hope, charity, temperance, justice, fortitude, and prudence, and with each virtue came the presentation of a gift.  Mistress Fiona was there in spirit, as a member of her household carried an urn with some of her ashes, and Tsivia was invested with a medallion that once she had worn.  The ladies with the tissues were very busy during the ceremony.  When it came time to read the scroll, it was revealed that there were in fact two scrolls, technically “promissories” — one with text in the shape of a Pelican by Lady Cerridwyn, and the other, consisting of text only, by Tsivia’s old friend Master Robert of Two Cliffs (which nearly caused Tsivia to fall over when she heard the name). 

One comment heard during the ceremony was that many enjoyed the “old style” approach with lots of pomp and circumstance.  Congratulations to the newest Pelican and way-back Septentrian!

Cloth of Gold 2008

 There’s nothing quite like the accomplishment of going, in the space of nineteen hours, from a pile of fabric, findings, and ideas to complete, finished garments with multiple layers.  Held once again at the Lake Vista clubhouse in Oshawa and hosted by the Canton of Eoforwic, Cloth of Gold attracted six teams up to the challenge.  

Septentria fielded three teams.  The team consisting of Lady Violetta and Lady Brigit from Vest Yorvik managed to complete their 13th century man’s outfit, including undertunic, braies, hosen, coif, and outer tunic, despite having only two active sewers.  Another team, consisting of Lord Niall the Victualler and his family, recreated a tableau from the Manesse codex (bottom).  The lady’s garment, consisting of undertunic, stockings, shoes, pouch, tunic, surcote, and fillet (the final four items in gleaming silk colours) was finished to completion.  A team led by THLady Unnr Hringsdottir and consisting mainly of ladies from Eoforwic (top) completed an extensive, handsewn Norse women’s outfit, including undertunic, stockings, shoes, tunic, apron dress, mantle, cap, and accessories.

Three teams, including two from Starleaf Gate in the Middle Kingdom, rounded out the competitors.  Team Ramshaven completed a women’s Italian ensemble, including hairstyle (middle), despite having lost their Italian expert to illness. The Gluttons for Punishment completed an early Anglo-Saxon ensemble with multiple layers sewn by hand mostly with hand-spun thread, and Crystal Cat completed a women’s 16th century Spanish ensemble.

Throughout the night, Lord Ludwig and Lady Sophia kept the contestants awake with ever-available coffee and well-fed with nutritious food.  The event staff, including Lady Jocelyn, also stayed on-site to work on projects..

After each team presented their outfit and received tokens from Baron Percival and Baroness Christiana, the judges announced the winners. First place in Novice went to Ramshaven; first place in Advanced to Unnr’s team. Special commendations went to Gluttons for Punishment for fibre nuttiness and Lord Niall’s team for teamwork and sprit.

Late Winter Shoot 2008

Just as Winter War is the traditional opening of the Melee Season, archers look to Late Winter Shoot to knock the rust off of their arrows and prepare for the upcoming archery season.  The event always attracts many archers from around Ealdormere as well as visitors from AEthelmearc. This year was no exception, with over 40 archers taking the line.  This year also saw the addition of a new activity, with thrown weapons enthusiasts bearing the chilly temperatures and the melting snow to toss a few knives and axes.

The tournament results had a distinctly southern flavour to them. The morning’s Winter Shot was won by Baron Caleb (the new Baron of the Rhydderich Hael) with 158 points, followed by Lord Robert Guerin with 135 points and Sir Evander with 118 points.  The afternoon Winter Shoot was won by Baron Connor Bowsplitter, also of the Rhydderich Hael, with 164 points, followed by Baron Caleb (despite a spectacular crossbow failure near the end of the shoot) with 147 points, and Lord Aodhan with 138 points.   Baron Connor also won the Novelty Shoot.

After the tournaments ended, a short Baronial Court was held on the range.  Prizes of leather satchels and pouches were awarded to the tourney winners.  Bohemond from Caer Draeth was awarded a Bear’s Heart for his efforts in securing an  archery site for regular practices.  Lady Mahhilde de Valonges was awarded a Golden Bear for her many skills. A brass arrowhead to recognize archery promotion in Petrea Thule was passed on to THL Dafydd ap Sion.  TE Percival and Christiana noted this was the first anniversary of the announcement of their succession as Baron and Baroness of Septentria and thanked all for a wonderful first year.
