Spring Crown Tourney 2010
By Magistra Nicolaa de Bracton
The weather was perfect in the northern shire of Brennistein Vatn, within the Ducal estates of His Grace Finnvarr de Taahe, as TRM Quilliam and Dagmar hosted their Crown Tourney. A small but determined field entered the lists to vie for the right to succeed Their Majesties. First in the procession was Baron Brand, who was fighting for the first time for Duchess Jocea (resplendent in a dress with chequey sleeve lining). After presenting Her Grace to Their Majesties and the populace, he presented her with an engagement ring, which she accepted.
Although that was a hard act to follow, the tourney itself was well-fought. A round-robin portion selected the final eight for the double-elimination rounds, and in the end the strawberry leaves which covered the tourney field foretold a finals where the victor would one day reign a second time and eventually bear the title of Duke. Count Trumbrand, fighting for Countess Kaylah, met Count Etain, fighting for Countess Valfreya. Both had gone undefeated through the round-robin. Count Etain prevailed, and thus Prince Etain and Princess Valfreya became Ealdromere’s future.

Crown Tourney was hosted by the
Canton of Caer Draeth in a new site in Holland ’s
Landing (the familiar curling rink they’ve used for many years is now under
renovation.). Reports received of the tourney were that it was fought well and
hard. In the finals, Sir Evander, fighting for THL Melusine, met Sir Nigel,
fighting for Baroness Adrielle. Sir
Nigel emerged victorious, and Septentrians will once again take the High Seats
of Ealdormere this coming September.

Crown Tourney was contested this year
at the site usually used to host Ragnarok, thus gaining the moniker
“Ragnarcrown.” The weather problems of
the preceding weekend did not recur, and the tourney was held in gorgeous
sunshine. Their Excellencies of
Septentria were able to use a sunshade originally constructed by Eoforwic some
years ago that had been languishing in the basement of the Eoforwic
Quartermaster for some time and which has now been returned to usefulness.
Nine combatants entered the list, and
after a round robin tourney the semi-finalists were determined. Sir Evander Maclachlan was defeated by Sir
Etain au Naval, and Sir Siegfried Brandbeorn was victorious over THL Wat of
Sarum. Sir Etain prevailed in the
finals, and thus he and his lady wife Valfreya Greenspeare were invested as

Crown Tourney 2009

The canton of Ardchreag hosted Crown
Tourney on October 31 at the Sikorsky Hall in Oshawa .
This large site featured both ample indoor space and a lovely outdoor
area including a small chapel that proved to be perfect for a tourney.
Ardchreag had also paid attention to creating a period atmosphere by providing
each combatant couple with their own seating area decorated by banners, as well
as snacks for the tourney. In addition,
King Nigel and Queen Adrielle presented each combatant and consort with a
hand-crafted box for equipment or feast gear.
Prince Radagasius of the Middle was in attendance, as well as a number
of guests from far lands.
Rain threatened throughout the day
and cold winds whipped through the site, but the tourney itself went off
without a hitch. The semifinals included
Duke Edouard, Viscount Mordain, Sir Wat, and THL Quilliam. Both Wat and Quilliam had gone undefeated
through the tourney and would ultimately meet in an all-Septentrian finals. In an interesting twist, Quilliam’s consort,
Baroness Dagmar, was Sir Wat’s squire.
The victor was THL Quilliam, and he and Baroness Dagmar were immediately
invested as Prince and Princess. His
Highness will be the youngest to ever rule Ealdormere and is the first graduate
of a youth combat program in the Known World to win a Crown Tourney. (His fellow graduate Lord Gaijin also fought
in Crown, his first, that day).
A sumptuous feast was served later in
the day, prepared by Lord Ludwig and Lady Sofi’a. Trick-or-treating between tables also took
place, as did a continuation of a game to foist a set of zebra ears and tail on
various unsuspecting guests. A short
Court also took place in which Baroness Nicolaa was presented with the Award of
the Scarlet Banner for archery.

Fall Crown was hosted by the Canton
of Greyfells at what is now becoming a traditional event site, the Rideau Acres
Campground. The torrential rain forced
the tourney indoors and somewhat restricted the size of the list field and the
use of mass weapons forms, but the fighting was still of high quality and
intriguing to watch.
Several Septentrians distinguished
themselves in the Tourney. Lord Quilliam, fighting in his first Crown, advanced
far into the lists and just missed the final four, defeating Duke Edouard
Beausoliel along the way. Sir Siegfried
is now a familiar sight in the final rounds;
he, too, advanced to the final
four. He was defeated by Sir Nigel, who then defeated Count Edward the Red to
reach the finals against Duke Roak, who had gone undefeated. The finals featured some of the most stylish
fighting yet seen in a Crown final, with Sir Nigel at times appearing to have
stepped out of a period fighting treatise.
A bout with six-foot spears was fought with a pair of weapons that had
been finished to look nearly like the real thing.
In the end, Duke Roak, fighting for
Countess Jocea, overcame Sir Nigel in an intense final, and thus became the new
Prince of Ealdormere. Word has it that a creative Coronation ceremony is in the
works for next April.

Son of Khan (Spring Crown Tourney, 2002)
Wulfgang Donnerfaust
My lady and I arrived a few minutes late for our shift, so it was a bit of
a mad scramble to get registered at Troll, changed, and at the Khan's side in a
handful of moments. Thus began my day of attending a very intense Khan as
his successor won the pewter crown.
We will be in good hands should the unthinkable
happen and our Khan meet an untimely and no doubt gruesome end. With
Their Highnesses Roak and Arlette on the thrones, Ealdormere's ideals shall not
remain unrealized.
Word from the south is that the situation is
deteriorating rapidly. What began as a discussion regarding how many
chickens would be the equivalent of one goat has snowballed into border
skirmishes, political maneuverings, and lawlessness. I fear the worst, as
our Khan has felt the blood frenzy that seems to have taken hold of our
neighbors. He may yet announce his intentions to ride Ealdormere to
war. The brief scuffle that almost led to tragedy at his coronation has
been the precursor to other talks. At this event, for example, I heard
discussion regarding what His Majesty referred to as "playful border
skirmishes" between our lands and the Midrealm. Their new Prince was
in attendance during the tournament, and seemed to laugh heartily at the new
game put forth by His Majesty. His Highness may learn soon enough what it
is like to play with Ealdormere. Investing in some more chirurgeons may
prove fruitful for the Dragon. The Wolf has very sharp teeth, and runs
swift and quick.
Our Seneschal was impressed with my garb, and even
said so! Although I am surprised he noticed during his very quiet
coup. I happened past as he was trying on the Baron's throne for
size. Be warned, good Chreaggers. He looked very comfortable.
Off duty was the time for this Firbolg to put his
feet up, and I did so while sampling my first taste of an excellent and
dangerous strawberry/cinnamon cordial. Eirik discussed the merits of his
surprisingly
compact camp shower.
compact camp shower.
There was a contest for gentles without their
Award of Arms. The goal was to identify as many Arms as they could among
a selection of about 15. I stayed very far away from that, but it looked
like fun for those with more knowledge of Ealdormerean heraldry than I.
Another auction was
held to raise funds; later at Court it was revealed that over $300 had been
collected! Again, I did not get to participate, but there were a few bits
and pieces that caught my eye. Next time, perhaps.
The Chivalry meeting was interrupted by a mundane
Highway Patrolman knocking on the Royal Room door and demanding to speak to
Robert Holly. When Her Majesty jumped out from behind and yelled
"Gotcha!" the Khan's intention to chase down the officer was halted
only after he learned that it was not a
man in costume. They had been brought to the site in response to a rogue 911 call that had been traced there. I'm sure the muttered death threats were made in jest. That crazy Khan. What a kidder!
man in costume. They had been brought to the site in response to a rogue 911 call that had been traced there. I'm sure the muttered death threats were made in jest. That crazy Khan. What a kidder!
Court took it's usual place after feast, and it
was a rather condensed affair, and I do not refer to the time. There was
very little room around the thrones to maneuver, and I was sitting both beside
the Khan as was proper, and in front of the visiting Prince, which was
not. I am not the smallest fellow in the world, those among you who know
me can attest to that. A better door than a window, I believe is an accurate
description. Moving the thrones to the end of the hall rather than the side may
have allowed for some breathing room, but of course it is the wish of the Khan
and Khatun that must be obeyed.
Fealty was sworn, and the knight who had taken a
knee did so with a voice as strong as the Khan's arm, and stature as proud as
the Khatun. I was very impressed, and felt that it was proper and right.
Lady Mauvreen was awarded her Maiden's Heart, Lord
Normand Hauberkker received his Award of Arms, and Rylyn Buchanan was put on
vigil as the last step before becoming a Pelican. These are only some of
the awards their Majesties were lucky enough to be able to hand out.
Sitting in the Big Seat (Spring Crown Tourney, 2002)
Eirik Andersen
I didn't do a whole lot at Crown Tourney. It was
my first event after about a month long break from SCA events, and I was eager
to get there!
I traveled to Kitchener-Waterloo the night before
the event with Evander and Melusine and we stayed at Ariana and Don's home
there. Made for a short trip Saturday morning.
On my arrival I was surprised that one of
Ardchreag's past members, Megan of Ardchreag had attended. I spent most of the
morning and early afternoon reminiscing with her about old times and filling her
in on who is who, that sort of thing. She brought some photos for the Ardchreag
10th Anniversary
book that Colyne is working on, which I have scanned.
book that Colyne is working on, which I have scanned.
The rest of the day, I took care of business that I had with the Baron and
Baroness and Their Majesties regarding stickers and I caught up with other
people I had not seen in a while. It was nice to be back. Crown Tourney seemed
a little small people wise, look like 200 or so people attended. I didn't pay a
whole lot of attention to the Tournament that day, so you will have to rely on
others thoughts.
I left the event just as feast was starting with a
number of people including Siegfried and Vlad. We journeyed a short while to a
buffet restaurant known as the Stone Crock, which was excellent by my standards
and expectations. Many of us left from the restaurant directly home, myself
included.
All in all, I enjoyed my day.
Event Report: Aaron and Rustique’s Crown Tourney (2001)
Thorfinna gra’feldr
This was only the second Crown Tourney
I’ve ever attended, and I hadn’t been in the SCA long enough to really
appreciate the first one, so I hoped to get a chance to really experience this
one. Being more familiar with everyone involved definitely added to my
enjoyment of the day.
The hall was resplendent with
banners and standards of all shapes and sizes when I first arrived; Iolanda and
Normand had already claimed a space—Iolonda’s Green Bison hanging proudly above
them—for Ardchreag to gather in. We were a strong presence, with at least a
dozen of us there, not including our two newest recruits—Colyne’s brother
Stephen Scrymgouer and his lady Jennifer—attending their first event
ever. Upstairs, merchants offered their wares, a children’s area offered
activities for the younger SCAdians, and competition and display tables offered
examples of A&S works for the populace to vote on with various beans to
denote their rank. Everything from garb and horns to illumination and shoes
were entered or displayed.
Soon, the tournament
commenced, providing a splendid display of martial skill for the gathered
onlookers. In time the contenders were narrowed to a final five: Sir Mordain,
Sarnac Kir, Sergeant Malik abd' al-Rahman, Siegfried Brandboern and Master Sergeant Worgen MacGregor. It came
down to a best of five between Malek and Sarnac that had them tied at two
fights apiece, with the Crown resting on the outcome of one final battle. In
the end, Sarnac emerged victorious and was acknowledged as Prince of Ealdormere,
and the line of the North was once again secure.
In the afternoon, Brandt held
a leather-working class and taught the art of belt making, and Colyne taught
his first Games Guild of Ealdormere class on Tafl, both of which were well
received. The classes offered a break from the fighting (naturally, the main
focus of the event) for those not as interested in watching every match, or
just for a bit of a break. Afterwards, it was time to set up for Feast.
This Feast was the best I’ve
been to yet; the presentation of each dish was carefully planned and displayed.
From chicken pastries decorated with tiny sails and tarts served on shields, to
spearing monks and dead fish in bloody soup, it was fantastic and culminated
with the presentation of a great Golden Stag. Heralded by a procession of beach
party-goers tooting their horns, the beast was presented to the Royal table and
then wheeled around the hall by Master Hector, who (with great relish) shouted
out “Deer Guts!” to all as he served.
During the dining festivities,
Kersteken, Skeldergate’s A&S Minister, handed out the awards for the Arts
& Sciences competition. Ardchreag was represented well, with awards going
to five of our canton-mates: Mahault for her garb research and sewing, Iolanda
for her Nalbinding and shoe-making, to Berend for his Viking Sax, and to
Elspeth. Normand also had an example of his tiny, 128-ring piece of
chainmail on the display table. Wassail Creaggers!
Earlier in the day I had been
seconded by Kersteken and the Queen to assist as Lady in Waiting and had the
privilege of handing His Majesty the tokens given to each of the combatants and
their inspirations in the tournament - a hand crafted beeswax trillium tea
light. Colyne was also grabbed to act as spear bearer for both courts, and protected
Their Majesties diligently. I was relieved of duties for the evening court,
charged instead with taking photographs of a ‘special event’. My friend Eogan,
Kersteken’s husband, was given his Award of Arms for his exceptional dedication
to the art of heavy combat. Despite camera troubles (the batteries were dying)
I captured the moment, and made sure to get a picture of the proud new Lord.
Once
court had ended, things pretty much seemed to be over and people began to pack
up and go home. Colyne and I had been hoping to have a little Games Guild demo,
but there was no one left to play! Instead, we were invited to the Post-Rev at
Berus and Marion ’s
place, but in the end the day had caught up with us and we decided we should
just head home to bed. It was an extremely fun-packed event for me, and has
actually inspired me to get more involved in the planning of events (God help
me). All in all, a great day!

By Master Hector of the Black Height
From the first to be

From a King to a
Prince, to a King and a Queen.
From the cold days
before, through the reigns in-between,
To the last and the
first; in our hearts evergreen.
From the last to the

There was bitterness
once -- but the dark days are past.
In the hard days found
friends; such good friends are made fast:
To the hand of the

Let the last days
shine bright; let our Princess shine forth
As the fire in our

Hers the line that has
blazed and has guided us forth
To the gift of the

And today we recall
the cold winters gone by;
Here we gather in
hope, for true hope cannot lie.
Gladly bid dawn hello,
and yet, ere sweet good-bye
Let one last torch-lit
night to the North Star swift fly.

Just Whose Birthday is it? (Spring Crown, May 27, 2006)
By THLaird Colyne Stewart
The sun was bright and the sky was clear upon the morning of May 27th. Þorfinna and I awoke early, please to see that the constant rain of the past few days was no where to be seen. We quickly packed and awaited the Bastille Boys, who were going to pick us up in their carriage. Before too long Sir Evander maneuvered his large carriage into our yard, and he, Kel, Lord Amelius Claudius Rattanicus and THL Baldric Leeman of Newcastle Emlyn hopped out and helped us load up our gear. An uneventful trip along His Majesty’s highways soon found us entering the lands of the Canton of Caer Draeth.
The site was a bustle with activity as many people had made
it to site before us. Fencers were stringing up a list field, as were youth
combat marshals, and archers were already bending their bows. A crowd of folks
walked around talking and enjoying the sun as the Crown participants armoured
up in shade tents along the side of the outdoor list field.
We hauled our gear over to the far side of the lists, and
set up beside Baroness Adrielle Kerrec, Sir Nigel Macfarlane and Lord William
Donovan. We were soon joined by Lady Tarian verch Gadarn, Lord Eirik Andersen,
Lady Lassarfhina inghean Uilleag (looking radiant in her new blue bliaut), Lord
Rhisiart ap Meredudd and several others throughout the day. A shade was
erected, a table set up, and food spread out.
On the other side of Nigel and Adrielle House Hrogn and
House Galbraith had a pavilion where I was to later consume some most excellent
lemon loaf.
When I went to change I discovered that I had forgotten my
pants. Luckily, Evander lent me his to use.
Our Lawspeaker, THL Keja Tselebnika, gave me several issues
of the Ursus to scan in an effort to bolster the Baronial Archives. Also, Lord
Normand Hauberger gave me a copy of Dame TSivia’s Kingdom Histories to further
the study and recording of our kingdom’s history.
Evander, Nigel and Rhisiart all armoured up and Evander
warmed up against Lord Wat of Sarum, King’s Champion, looking very fancy in his
new surcoat. I spent my time embroiled in squirely duties, fetching that and
carrying this. The tournament’s procession was held inside the hall, with the
thrones sitting under banners depicting each reign in the Line of the North.
Each combatant and consort were given a handmade ceramic bottle created
especially for the tournament.
Once all the combatants and their consorts had been
introduced and made their pledges everyone filed outside so the tournament
itself could commence. The full list of combatants and consorts were:
Count
Sarnac Ba'adur for Countess Joleicia of Litchfield
Lord
Evan Quicktongue for THLady Arnora Dunestan
Master
Trumbrand the Wanderer for THLady Kaylah the Cheerful
THLady
Kaylah the Cheerful for Master Trumbrand the Wanderer
Duke

Lady
Jocea of the Rozakii for Duke Roak of Ealdormere
THBaron
Tankred of Tanglewood for THBaroness Rosalinda de la Fuentes
Lord
Derfel Mallory for Lady Melisande du Rocher
Baron
Phaidrig McNeil for Mistress Etaoin O'Fearghail
Sir
Evander MacLachlan for THL Melusine De La Rose
Mistress
Aelfwyn of Longwood for Baron Hereward the FarDweller
Lord
Rhisiart ap Meredudd for Lady Lassarfhina inghean Uilleag

Wulfesbana Hlaford for Lady Seonag nic Thomais
Sir
Siegfried Brandboern for THLady Mauvrneen MacKellar
THLord
Phelan Gann for Lady Maiwen Scarbrow
Sir
Nigel MacFarlane for Mistress Adrielle Kerrec
The tournament was a good old-fashioned double elimination
best of one tournament. The fighting was quick, exciting, and—from what I could
see—clean. Evander made it into the quarter finals, but in his duel with Sir
Roak his sword became entangled and this led to his defeat. The semi-finals were
Sir Siegfried against Sir Sarnac, and Sir Roak against Master Trumbrand. Sarnac
and Roak went on to the finals, with Roak crowning Jocea as Ealdormere’s new
princess.
There then followed a very long meeting of the Order of the
Chivalry that went on for many hours. So many hours in fact, that it ended just
after feast had begun. Those of us who had not made it onto feast waited for
our knightly companions to emerge so that we could go and find sustenance
off-site. While we were waiting we spent the time in excellent conversation,
and in trying to help a poor fellow who had lost his key in the grass.
We also celebrated Rhisart’s birthday with a small rendition
of ‘Happy Birthday’ and a chocolate cake provided by his family. And though it
was not my birthday I did receive a late birthday present from Their
Excellencies Corwyn and Domhnail Galbraith—a hand painted box. They also gave
Þorfinna and I a large spoon brought back from their recent trip to China .
Eventually the knights and masters-of-arms emerged blinking
into the sun and my companions and I set off for a certain Scottish restaurant
for a quick dinner.
After we had eaten, Evander, Rattanicus, Þorfinna, Lady
Ariana de la Rose and I were waiting in the lobby for Kel to rejoin us. After a
few moments it was determined that someone should have to go in search of him
in the garderobes. Evander proposed a game of paper-rock-scissors between the
three men, which I tried to get out of by saying that I was not from their
shire. No dice. So we played, and kept tying. And tying, and tying and tying.
Until finally, with a muttered “Damn,” I was defeated and went at once to be
about my mission. I entered the garderobes and called out for Kel, going to far
as to look for his feet under stall doors, all the while being watched by a
confused man drying his hands. I returned to the group empty handed, when
someone suggested looking outside. Sure enough, there was Kel sitting on a
bench sipping at a drink.
When we arrived back on site, we prepared for court. Since
Evander now needed his pants I went bare legged.
A member of Bastille du Lac had contacted 3M, a company that
produces a product dear to most every SCAdian’s heart—duct tape. Upon
explaining to them what it is we do as a hobby, 3M delivered a flat of duct
tape to Bastille. To that end, Bastille (and people who were drafted into
helping) were going to deliver 200 rolls of duct tape to Their Majesties Aaron
and Rustique. At court Evander presented himself to Their Majesties, and
explained that Bastille had a gift to deliver to them. He then called for the
gift to be brought in and Baldric ambled into court juggling rolls of tape,
followed by Rattanicus and THL Tiberius bearing a chest full of tape. Next came
Lord Brandt and Þorfinna with a pole arm slung across their shoulders, draped
with rolls of tape. I followed, bearing a great sword holding many more rows.
And then came Lord Ludwig, THL Dafydd and Donovan bearing boxes full to
overflowing. The display was met with approval by the crowd, who applauded the
presentation and cheered the gift from the shire.
I then drifted to the back of the hall to watch the rest of
court, and could therefore not hear all of what transpired. I can report the
following though:
Tiberius received an Award of the Orion, while Lassarfhina
and Lady Ceridwyn y Anghofidig both received Awards of the Maiden’s Heart.
There then followed the first of at least three standing ovations as the
Trillium Herald, Percival deLaroque was inducted into the Order of the Wain,
making him an Honourable Lord.
Not yet done assigning new rank to worthy individuals, Their
Majesties then called Petrus of the Marines before them and made him a Baron of
Their court.
Master Hector then stood to sing happy birthday to the
queen, who remarked that it was not her birthday. Blame for this misinformation
was spread about and soon Baroness Adrielle and Master Garraed Galbraith were
standing before Their Majesties, all three of Laurels trying to explain how the
error had occurred. They agreed that though it was not really Her Majesty’s
birthday, they still wanted to present her with a gift—that of a new person to
be placed on vigil for the Order of the Laurel .
They then called on Her Excellency Septentria, Domhnail Galbraith, to join
them. The crowd broke into ecstatic applause, and Baron Corwyn’s jaw dropped in
amazement. It dropped further when Garraed asked the crowd to be silent so he
could likewise call His Excellency Corwyn forward!
When the crowd finally quieted and the current members of
the Order had congratulated Corwyn and Domhnail, court was concluded.
East Kingdom Crown Tournament (May 6, 2006)
By THLaird Colyne Stewart
On a rainy overcast morning Sir Siegfried Brandbeorn, Lord
Amelius Claudius Rattanicus, Lady Þorfinna gráfeldr and I made our way to East
Kingdom Crown just south of the mundane city of Montreal in the Barony of Dragon Dormant. We
were all under the impression that the event was actually in the city proper
but it was in a camp ground in the outskirts of the barony, just over the
Ealdormere border. The weather was bad—wet, cold and windy. Luckily, Þorfinna
and I had brought cold weather gear, including gloves and cloaks. Siegfried and
Rat were not so lucky, especially considering that the fighting was held
outside in the rain. The rain was not heavy (at least, not most of the time)
but it was a constant from when we arrived on site (11 am ) until 5 pm just before Crown finally ended.
In the change room we ran into a young fellow whose name I
never caught who helped set up Evander’s vigil back in 2001. Rat was quick to
point out to anyone who would listen that I was one of Evander’s boys so I got
to talk to a few people that way. We met an ex-Calontiri named Esengi who’s a
friend of my squire-brother Varenko (who is currently living in the East), as
well as Esengi’s lady Bess who both seem very nice. In fact, everyone we met
seemed friendly. We managed to talk to Baron Conrad Connor MacAllyn a bit and
wish him luck in the coming combat. (Conrad is one of Evander’s former
squire-brothers.)
The sideboard was great, with lots of meat, bread, fruit,
pickles, cabbage rolls, carrots, soup and lots of other stuff.
Watching the tournament was very interesting, seeing all the
little things that the East does differently from my own kingdom. There was no
procession or announcement of fighters at the beginning of the tournament, and
the first round was selected by challenges. The members of the Chivalry (and a
few selected others—like Conrad) were the challenges. The majority of the
Unbelted fighters got to challenge which knight, master-of-arms or up-and-coming
hot-stick squire they wanted to face first. (I’m not sure if this is common
practice in Eastern Crowns or not, this being my first.) They ran four list
fields concurrently, and did armour inspections in the lists before the first
fights. The two finalists had friends do a boast of how they were about to win
the Crowns.
The fighting seemed to be very clean. Shots to the body
seemed to be taken harder than we throw in Ealdormere, though head shots seemed
to be taken much lighter. This was consistent across the board. The atmosphere
was a lot more laid back than Ealdormerean Crowns, with people fraternizing and
introducing their consorts to each other during lulls in the fighting in a walk
way that ran through the lists.
The quarter finals were Sir Thorvald Halvorssen (called Thorson)
vs. Sir Griffith FitzWilliam and Sir Gottfried Kelson vs. Sir Lucan von
Drachenklaue. The semis were rather irreverent, with lots of joking and hamming
it up. It was odd; not as serious as the Crowns I have attended up to now. Thorson
switched from sword and shield to two axes to fight Griffith who beat him twice
to advance to the finals. After much tumbling and tomfoolery Lucan beat Kelson
once to advance to the finals.
Ah, the finals. I wish I had timed this. Lucan and Griffith
faced off and just stood staring at each other. Then, they’d throw one shot
each at each other, step back, stare at each other and reset. The first bout
lasted at least 15 minutes (with Lucan winning), and then they took a 5 min
break. They fought sword and board again and the fight progressed as the first
had. Þorfinna, Rat and I did not watch this round as we were inside trying to
get warm. We got changed into mundanes, wrapped our cloaks on top of our coats
and went back out to the lists. Griffith
had won the second bout, so they were currently in the third round. Finally,
after about an hour, Lucan beat Griffith
to win the Tourney.
It was now five
o’clock , and since we were all soaked and cold and Rat had a
migraine we headed for home.
It was very interesting to attend an event where we knew
very few people and were the only Ealdormereans in attendance (or Ealdormerati,
as the ex-Calontiri called us). It was almost like being a newbie again.
A Squire’s Tale (Crown Tournament of Edouard III and Genevieve II, May 24, 2005)
By THLaird Colyne Stewart
On the 28th day of May, a grand tournament was
held in the lands of Septentria, within the canton of Caer Draeth. There, the
following good gentles did cross swords to determine who would be the new
Prince and Princess of Ealdormere:
Mistress Aelfwyn of Longwood for THL Hereward the Far
Dweller
THL Baldric Leeman of Newcastle Emlyn for Lady Brayla la
Vienette
THL Corrig McKail for THL Emer nic Aidan
Lord Derfel Malory for Lady Melisande du Rocher
Viscount Edward the Red for Viscountess Rylyn Buchanan
Sir Evander MacLachlan for THL Melusine de la Rose
THL Kayla the Cheerful for Sir Trumbrand the Wanderer
Lord Lothar the Gregarious for Lady Katherine of
Renfrewshire
Baron Phaidrig McNeil for Baroness Etaoin O'Fearghail
Count Sarnac Ba'adur for Countess Joleicia of Litchfield
Lord Tarquin Bjornsson for Lady Caitlin inghean Tomais ui
Dhuibihir
Master Trumbrand the Wanderer for THL Kayla the Cheerful
Baron Tynne Duair ap Beul for Baroness Tabitha Dearval
Lord Wat of Sarum for Lady Oksana z Moravy
Herr Wulfgang Donnerfaust for Lady Jean-Margaret Donnerfaust
There I did accompany my lord knight, Sir Evander
MacLachlan, and proclaim him before the king and queen. In my hands I bore his
mighty helm, while THL Anne Tinker did bear his shield. It was for me a busy
day, as I was the only MacLachlan squire in attendance who could wait on my
lord knight. For one of my brothers is living now in the Kingdom of the East,
one has gone on a quest and never returned, and the third—my eldest brother—was
busy that day. For Lord Tiberius of Warwickshire was acting in the capacity of
Kingdom Earl Marshal, as Edward the Red was participating in the tourney. From
comments I overheard it seems my brother did an excellent job, giving me even
more reason to respect him.
And so I heralded for my knight, carried his helm, ushered
him about for spontaneous illuminations, watched from the sidelines while he
fought and helped him with his equipment as required.
The tournament was a best of five round robin, which lasted
for over five hours. This was, in this squire’s most humble of opinions, likely
the cleanest crown tournament in the past few years. Many were the points of
honour granted that day, and the combatants all seemed to be smiling and
enjoying themselves on and off the field. One tale of valour and honour was
later related in court, concerning THL Baldric. Baldric had given his squire
chain to his friend Count Sir Aaron Preslee Worgansson, with instructions to
not return it if he did not acquit himself with dignity on the field. Aaron
related in court how Baldric, upon taking both of an opponent’s arms said, “My
lord, I cannot defeat you in such a manner,” and asked the marshals to restart
the fight. To applause Aaron gave the chain to His Majesty, who placed it back
around Baldric’s worthy neck.
But I ramble and get ahead of myself. For before court the
tournament of course had to come to an end. And in the end, Viscount Edward the
Red (who was undefeated) and Count Sarnac Ba’adur (who had only lost to Edward)
faced each other in the finals. The finals were to be three best of five
rounds. The first round was polearm, which was won by Edward. The second was
sword and shield, which was won by Sarnac. The final round was in great sword.
Both Edward and Sarnac won two fights in the third round, leaving the balance
of the tournament in one final clash of arms. Edward was to emerge victorious,
and he and Rylyn were recognized as Ealdormere’s new heirs.
While the tournament waged on for many hours, good gentles
from across the kingdom partook in many pleasant pastimes. For there was
merchanting, archery, thrown weapons and other such activities spread across
the grounds. In one corner youth combat was held, with some very energetic
resurrection melee battles.
In the evening a brief court was held after a sumptuous
feast. At this court, Tarquin (who was caught napping) was awarded a Scarlet
Banner. Also, Baron Eric of Longacres retired from the position of Trillium
Herald, with Lord Percival deLaroque being sworn in as his successor.

Ealdormere Crown Tournament XIV (October 23, 2004)
By THLaird Colyne Stewart
It was a bright autumn day. Orange leaves dropped silently
from drooping tree limbs to become a part of the vast mosaic over the grass.
Lord and ladies from across the land walked through the crisp October air,
their breath puffing slightly before them, leaves crunching under their feet.
Amongst these lords and ladies walked the King and Queen, who were to hold a
tournament that day. For Malik and Genevieve desired heirs to help protect the
northern lands.
The assembled members of the populace gathered and sat in
attendance upon Their Majesties as those who were to compete were presented
before Them. The names proclaimed by the heralds were:
Hlafdige
Aelfwyn et Langenwuda who fought for Baron James the Mercer
TH
Lady Arwyn of Leicester who fought for Master
Cerdic O’Cuileamhain
Lord

Lord
Wat of Sarum who fought for Lady Oksana z Moravy
Master
Worgan MacGregor who fought for Baroness Anne Talstadt
Lord
Yvon DuBois who fought for Lady Robyn O'Connor
Two lists were run simultaneously, and the worthy combatants
fought for the glory of their consorts and to honour themselves and their
kingdom. The battles were often long and hard, with four fighters to eventually
be names the semi-finalists. These were TH Lord Kasimir of Stargard, Lord
Ceycil des Manches Argents, Syr Edouard Beausoleil and Count Sarnac Ba’adur.
First, the Vendel Kasmir faced the lord from the Manches Argents. As Ceycil had not yet lost a
bout, and Kasmir had, the Vendel had to defeat Ceycil in two consecutive best-of-three bouts.
Their battle was long, as Ceycil tried to bait Kasmir by stomping, posing, and quipping. However,
these tactics did not work, and Kasmir was unflustered. With slow precision he whittled Ceycil
down, beating him two bouts straight to take the first round. He then beat Ceycil again, and then
took his first loss. It now came down to one fight. Whoever threw the one last good shot would
go to the finals. Again Ceycil tried to distract his opponent, and again it did not work. As Ceycil
hit the floor the hall exploded with cheers for the exhausted Vendel.
Kasmir then advanced to the finals,
to face Sir Edouard, who had beaten Sir Sarnac—Kasmir’s knight—to advance.
Edouard bested Kasmir in two best-of-three rounds to place the Crown of the
Princess of Ealdormere upon the brow of Genevieve
de Rosse. A happy Queen pronounced that it was a joyous day, as she
had given birth to heirs. To mark the occasion, she decided to name her
daughter after herself!
Crown Tournament XIII, May 15, 2003
By
THLaird Colyne Stewart
Ah
young one, it is good to see you again. Come, have a seat by the fire. We were
just talking about tournaments, about those grand displays of feats of arms,
where lords and ladies fight inspired by their consorts love. There are many
tournaments held throughout our lands, but the most important of them all is
the Crown Tournament, for it is there that gentles from across the kingdom
gather to display their courtesy, grace, and skill at arms as our Majesties'
Heirs are chosen by the outcome.
There
was, as you all must know, a Crown Tournament held this past week. It was in
the Shire of Trinovantia Nova that our new Prince and Princess were to be
decided. I will name the combatants, and most, if not all, of their names
should be familiar to you, for they are all pillars of our kingdom in their
fashion:
Lord Grimmroth Skullhammer for
Viscountess Moria the Black
Baron Menken Brechen for Baroness
Eleanor Cadfan
Baron Phaidrig McNeil for Mistress
Etaoin O'fearghail
Baron Sergeant Malik 'abd al-Rahman
for Maitresse Baronne Genevieve
Chastellain d'Anjou
Chastellain d'Anjou
THLady Arwyn of Leicester
for Master Cerdic O'Cuilleamhain
Sir Evander MacLachlan for THLady
Melusine De La Rose
Master Trumbrand the Wanderer for
THLady Kaylah the Cheerful
THLady Kaylah the Cheerful for Master
Trumbrand the Wanderer
Sir Nigel MacFarlane for Baroness
Adrielle Kerrec
THLord Etian au Naval for Lady
Valfreya Greenspeare
Tiarna Eoin au Beirne for al-Shariifa
Zahra bint al-Nahr al-Ishbiiliya
al-Naariya
al-Naariya
THLord Corrig McKail for Lady Emer nic
Aidan
Lord Mung Lo for Prydyddes Gwerydd
verch Rhys
Lord Tiberius Justus for THLady Anne
Tinker
THLord Wilheem Caimbeul for Lady
Skallagrim Worgenson
Streonwold Wulfesbana, Hlaford for
Lady Seonag Nic Thomais
Lady Seonag Nic Thomais for Streonwold
Wulfesbana, Hlaford
Leif of House Hrogn for Lady Morrigan
of Temair
Lord Ymir, the thinnest Viking for
Lady Rosalind Fitzwilson
The
crowd was unfortunately small, perhaps because of the weather, perhaps of the
Baron Wars to the south, perhaps because of the close-by Crowning of the new
King of the Middle. I know not. Contrary to popular belief, bards do not know
everything. Generally we just pretend that we do.
Regardless
of the size of the crowd, it was attentive, and the fighters found themselves
the centre of rapt attention. The tournament was done as a double elimination
tournament, with a number of bye fights which were fought with Baron Konrad
Mathias Jaeger von Dubrau, His Excellency Ramshaven. The fighters paired off,
the winners staying on the A-list, whilst those defeated moved to the B-list.
This continued until only three fighters remained undefeated. These were Baron
Malik, Sir Evander and Sir Nigel.
These
three then fought a round robin, which was taken by Baron Malik, forcing
Evander and Nigel to the B-list. Those fighters on the B-list were then paired
again. Any fighter on the B-line who lost left the tournament, until only one
remained. And it was thus that Master Trumbrand met Baron Malik in the finals.
The
final was to be three best of three rounds. The first round was fought sword
and shield, the second with polearm, the weapon of the third is unknown to me,
as the third round was not needed. For you see my friends, both combatants
fought bravely and well, with skill and chivalry, but the first, and the second
round, were both taken by the same man--Baron Malik.
Malik,
who had been in the Crown finals twice before, one of those times being
Ealdormere's first Crown tourney. Malik, serjant of the Red Company. Malik,
baron of the court. Malik, first baron of Rising Waters. [check these facts]
And
so Malik was brought before their Majesties Berus II and Marion II and a new
princely crown was placed upon his head. And he in turn placed a crown upon the
brow of his lady love, Genevieve. Genevieve, Mistress of the Pelican.
Genevieve, baroness of the court. Genevieve, first Baroness of Rising Waters.
And
so was the Royal line preserved and strengthened. And so does it continue.
Ealdormere's New Heirs (Fall Crown Tourney, October 25, 2003)
By THLaird Colyne Stewart
The forest in Vest Yorvik is
thick, the roads labyrinthine and populated with sprites and brownies who love
to misdirect travelers. So it was as we made our way to see TRMs Cennedi and
Susanna’s Crown Tournament. As we wound our way through the verdant thickets,
looking in vain for signs stolen by faeries, the rain was our constant and
incessant companion. Finally, in desperation, I threw salt about our wagon and
swung an iron bar about my head. Suddenly before us we saw the road we had been
seeking. Quickly, Thorfinna whipped the wagon’s reins and sped our horses out
of the overgrowth.
Finally upon the proper road we
soon found the great hall wherein the new Prince and Princess of Ealdormere
were to be chosen through acts of skill and might. Grateful to be indoors, we
gladly paid our entry taxes to the guards at the gate and entered the hall.
Though we were afraid that the faeries’ hi-jinks would make us late for the tournament,
it had not yet begun, though the procession of those competing was underway.
No official list of combatants
was circulated (none that I saw at any rate) but, as I recall, they were:
Sir Berus Jarl for Countess
Marion FitzWilliam
Viscount Sir Mordain Blackcloak
for Viscountess Mistress AElflaeda FitzAlain
Sir Evander MacLachlin for THLady
Melusine de la Rose
Master Trumbrand the Wanderer for
THLady Kaylah the Cheerful
Baron Phaidrig McNeil for
Mistress Etaoin O’Fearghail
Sheikh Sergeant Malik abd’ al
Rahman for Maitresse Baronne Genevieve Chastellain d’Anjou
THLady Kaylah the Cheerful for
Master Trumbrand the Wanderer
THLord Tynne Duair ap Beul for
Baroness Tabitha Dearval
Tiarna Eoin O'Beirne for THLady
Zahra bint al-Nahr al-Ishbiiliya al-Naariya
Lord Cecil des Manches Argentes
for Countess Tangwystl de Courci
Lord Kolbjorn Skatkaupandi for
Lady Wencendl inigena Jagomus of Rokesburg
Grimroth Skullhammer for Countess
Moria the Black
(If any of these names or titles
are incorrect, I humbly apologize and ask that you please send me corrections
for my files.)
Two lists were run concurrently,
in a round robin best of three format, and all those watching agreed that over
all the fighting was clean and courteous. Wassail to the honourable conduct of
Ealdormere’s fighters!
The combatants fought long and
hard and well, though in the end only two could advance to the final rounds.
These two hardy warriors were Sir Berus Jarl and Viscount Sir Mordain
Blackcloak. The finals consisted of three rounds. The first round was a best of
three in a weapon form of Sir Mordain’s choice. He chose spear and emerged the
victor of that round. The second round was in a style of Sir Berus’ choice, and
he chose sword and shield. Like Mordain, he emerged victorious in his chosen
form. The final round was likewise fought with sword and shield, and after many
great feats of arms had been preformed it was Sir Berus who was victorious.
Sir Berus and Countess Marion
were then brought before Their Majesties and were recognized as the right and
honourable heirs to the throne of Ealdormere. Wassail to Their Highnesses!
Throughout the day I wandered the
hall, seeking people to speak of about various bits of business, and was
likewise sought for the same purpose. I was free to so wander by the generous
offer of House Galbraith (especially in the person of Lord Hamish Gunn) to sell
copies of the Ursus at their table.
Court was held before feast, and
many people were honoured. Some of those so honoured were: Baroness Adrielle
Kerrec who was given a Scarlet Banner for her past efforts on the field,
Thorolfr smithr who received his Award of Arms (those watching getting much
mirth from watching Her Majesty attempt to pronounce his name), as well as Lord
Rhys ap Bledri and Lord Hereward the Far-Dweller being inducted into the Order
of Thorbjorn’s Hammer (making them both Honourable Lords). There were others,
and I apologize for not catching everyone’s names.
After court a great feast was
held, but remembering the tangled thicket through which we had to travel
through to reach our keep, we left before it was served and it is up to others
to chronicle what happened during the rest of the evening.
I here rest my pen.
The Kid Comes Out to Play (Ealdormere Crown Tournament XI, May 31, 2003)
By THLaird Colyne Stewart
The rains of May continued.
Their Royal Majesties had called for all who felt themselves
worthy to come into Their Barony of Ben Dunfirth to partake in a tourney. The
prize? To become heir of the kingdom, and to crown a consort.
The day of the Kingdom
of Ealdormere 's 11th
Crown Tournament was wet. A drizzle greeted us upon awaking, and it did not
stop all day long. Though, at times, it did intensify to the point where the
sound of water pounding on the roof was as if one were standing under a
waterfall. Cloaks recently dried out were called on again.
Thorfinna gra'feldr, Eirik
Andersen (who we think was still in our wagon from the weekend b efore) and I arrive just after half past nine in the morning. We found
ourselves a spot to sit behind Sir Berus
Jarl, Serjant Malik abd al-Raman, Baron Siegfried
Brandbeorn and Lady Isotta
Gianglifiazzi. All four were preparing to fight in the tourney.
Many Septentrians were in attendance that day, including two
past Baronesses of Septentria. Eirik, Septentria's unofficial Minister of
Propaganda, circulated the new Septentrian Recruitment posters.
The combatants and consorts were called, and soon each was
presented to Their Majesties. As listed in the event program, they were:
Baron Phaidrig McNeil for Mistress Etaoin O’Fearghail
Sir Rorry Cennedi
the Kid for Mistress Susanna the Unyielding
Sheikh Sergeant Malik abd’ al Rahman for Maitresse Baronne
Genevieve Chastellain d’Anjou
Master Konrad Matthias Jaegar for Dame Alyce de Sheppey
Dame Alyce de Sheppey for Master Konrad Matthias Jaeger
Sir Evander MacLachlan for THLady Melusine de la Rose
Master Trumbrand the Wanderer for THLady Kaylah the Cheerful
THL Kaylah the Cheerful for Master Trumbrand the Wanderer
Baron Siegfried
Brandbeorn for Lady Isotta
Gianfigliazzi
Lady Isotta
Gianfigliazzi for Baron Siegfried
Brandbeorn
THLord Tynne Duair ap Beul for Baroness Tabitha Dearval
Lord Yric de Mornay for Lady Brigit nic Larkin fra Galway
Lord Baldric
Leeman of Newcastle Emlyn for Lady Brayla la Viennette
The last to come before Their Majesties was Grimroth
Skullhammer, a fur clad b arbarian.
The Trillium Herald, Lord Erik of Longacres, when announcing him cried,
"May I present Lord Grimroth Skullhammer who fights today for..."
Here he paused and loudly whispered, "Who are you fighting for?" The
barbarian appeared confused, and Her Majesty graciously explained that each
fighter participating in the tournament must fight for a consort. Grimroth
nodded his understanding, held up one finger to ask for a moment of time, then
waded into a group of Ladies watching the procession. They wailed and ran at
his approach but he was fast enough to catch one, and Countess Moria the Black
was dragged b efore the Thrones of
Ealdormere. Moria begged Her Majesty not to let this thing happen, but the
Queen asked Moria to be Grimroth's consort for the good of the kingdom. To this
wish Moria acceded.
The combatants then took their seats as the four lists were
taken by heralds and marshals. The tournament was a round robin, best two out
of three. This meant that each fighter had to face all other fighters and fight
between two and three fights with each. Many though that this would make for a
very long day, but so well prepared and run were the lists, that the
tournament, from beginning to end, lasted no longer than approximately two and
a half hours.
Both Berus and
Malik had support staff, but neither Siegfried
nor Isotta did. Therefore Lord Wat
of Sarum, Lord Berend van der Eych and myself acted for them in this capacity,
fixing swords, tying straps, adjusting armour and giving encouragement.
The tournament, from my vantage point, was fought with
chivalry and honour. The number of questionable blows were low and no one's
nose horn was very long. All of the combatants from Septentria did great honour
to themselves, their consort and the kingdom that day. When the round robin was
completed the two fighters with the best records were Baron Siegfried Brandbeorn and Sir Rory Cennedi the Kid.
The finals were three best of three rounds, the first with
pole, the second with great sword and the third with sword and shield. Both men
fought bravely and well and in the end Cennedi
emerged victorious by defeating Siegfried
in four straight fights. (He won two with pole and two with great sword, making
the sword and shield round redundant.)
