Coronation in a Time of Plague

Today, April 25, 2020, was the Coronation of Their Majesties Rattanicus and Isabelle. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the actual event had to be cancelled. Instead, via a group Zoom chat with over 100 attendees, TRMs Kaylah and Trumbrand ceremonially removed the Crowns of the Queen and King of Ealdormere, and Rattanicus and Isabelle became the monarchs of the lupine realm. A variance was granted to extend Their reign by at least three months, with the expectation that they would have a Coronation then. Feeling that pledges of fealty should be made in person, they instead presented the following statement (scribed by Their Lawspeaker, Mistress Nicolaa de Bracton) which all who were watching could recite if so moved:

I here pledge unity and support
To the kingdom of Ealdormere
To uphold each other in dark days
And honour the laws and traditions
Giving hands and heart
To the health of the Kingdom
To ever follow the banner
And howl with the Wolf
I stand with Ealdormere
Apart, yet together in spirit
Until the day comes we can embrace again
Thus say I, (name).

Ozzie Cooks Da Pig (Fall Coronation 2010)

By THLaird Colyne Stewart

Ozzie is a Scottish bear hand puppet who resides in Ardchreag.

It was way too early to be up, I dunno what those people were thinking about. What sane person gets up so early to start cooking? So sleepy, but I cooked real good. That Mahault was in charge, she had good plan, everything laid out. I cut vegetables, I wash dishes. I sneak candied ginger when no one looking. Makes me hyper. More hyper. I runs around in circles, then that Mahault says if I gots so much energy I can wash chick peas. Lots and lots of chick peas. I fall in the pot of chick peas, and almost drown. Gross.

When I gets out da Arrochar House cleans me up. My kilt is all gucky. I has to change into poncey cotehardie. Lots of buttons. Takes half hour to do them all up. They look like chick peas.

Apparently feast is liked. I don’t see it. I sleeping by that time in back of kitchen, up on high shelf where no one can see me. Nappy time. I’m big time chef, though Mahault help too.

Fall Coronation 2010

By Magistra Nicolaa de Bracton

The canton of Petrea Thule hosted Coronation on a blustery late September Saturday at a new site in Lindsey.   Many gentles from around Ealdormere turned out to see Quilliam and Dagmar step down and the reign of TRM Etain and Valfreya begin, as well as the knighting ceremony of THL Baldric.  Their Majesties Quilliam and Dagmar began their last court by restating the addition to the Scroll of Honour for the youth combatants who represented Ealdormere at Pennsic.  Lady Rosalind Pax, who was not in attendance, was also added to the scroll of honour and gifted with a map on a hide of leather so that she might make her way back to Ealdormere.  An Award of Arms was given to Avelyn, a Scarlet Banner to Lord Bleddyn, and a Maiden’s Heart to Master Corwyn.

At that point, the Order of the Chivalry was summoned to Court, and Earl Syr David restated the boon for his Squire Baldric. Baldric himself came into Court, led by his young sons and accompanied by his lady wife, to the sounds of “Born on the Listfield” (led by his squire brother Baron Cynred).  Many speakers spoke on his behalf, several noting his relationship with Baroness Fiona and how proud she would be on this day.  Earl Syr David held the sword with King Quilliam to dub Baldric a knight, and then his scroll—to the tune of “Born on the Listfield”, and beautifully limned by Baroness Rachael— was sung by Master Hector.

Queen Dagmar then bestowed her favour, a quill with runic inscriptions, on THL Liadin for her many skills; and King Quilliam likewise bestowed his favour on Countess Domhnail.  Their Majesties thanked many people, including the scribes of Ealdormere; Lady Ceridwyn, Duchess Rustique, and Lady Jocelyn (for their administrative/entourage help), Lord Thorolfr and Lord Grom for their heraldic assistance; and then finally released their Champions, THL Varenko and Berus Iarl.

Finally the time came for Quilliam and Dagmar to depart in search of places to burn, things to pillage. As they did not wish to leave Ealdormere unprotected, they called forth Prince Etain and Princess Valfreya, who processed in together.   Quilliam was thus able to crown his “son” Etain, and then Dagmar presented the Queen’s crown to the new King, who crowned Queen Valfreya.

The day was full of fellowship and fun, including rapier and armoured tourneys, a largesse competition, and lots of good food.

Evening court saw the recognition of County status for Quilliam and Dagmar.  Their scrolls were wrought in leather by Master Tarketai and Lady Lyda provided the text in Old Norse, which she read out in Court.  A few leftover fealties were taken care of (oathbreaking with the wrath of a thousand avenging angels), as well as some other pieces of business. Most noteworthy were the appointment of THL Bjarn as King’s Champion and Duke Aaron as Queen’s Champion.  As Sir Baldric is no longer qualified to head the Unbelt team, he passed those duties on to Baron Tiberius.   In all, an auspicious start to a new reign!

Fall Coronation 2009

By Magistra Nicolaa de Bracton

Their Graces Roak and Jocea completed their reign and Their Majesties Nigel and Adrielle began theirs on a sunny, warm day in late September.  The final court of Roak and Jocea included the awarding of a Maiden’s Heart to Michael of Brentwood, the naming of many scribes to the Scroll of Honour for their work during the reign, and the elevation of Odette de St. Remy to the Order of the Laurel.  They then departed, leaving the Crowns on the thrones.  After Berus Jarl and Count Etian called the Chivalry forward to protect the thrones until an Heir stepped forward, Sir Nigel came forward to claim the throne, reciting his lineage.  After his right to reign was confirmed, he heard the duties of a King and took up the Crown. Her Majesty Adrielle was crowned by her King after hearing her own duties. Their Majesties then swore an oath based on a Coronation oath of Edward II and gave their fealty to the Kingdom.  Each of the Peerage orders invested Their Majesties with one of the symbols of power—the Chivalry with the Sword, the Laurels with the Sceptre, and the Pelicans with Cloaks—when they came forward to swear their fealties.  Count Etian was also offered, and accepted, the position of Queen’s Champion after the Chivalry had sworn their fealty.  The court then continued with the fealties of territorial barons, Royal peers and great officers of state before closing until evening;  the populace was instructed to think about the meaning of the oath before coming forward later that day.

A Pas d’Armes then took place at a crossroads on the site, near where Their Majesties had pitched a tent with a viewing gallery.  His Majesty held the field with his company of tenans (who ranged in age and experience from Duke Eliahu to Lord Bleddyn) accepting challenges from those present. Particularly notable were the two Dukes from Drachenwald in their finery.  The event was marked by visitors from the Middle and other kingdoms near and far, as Their Majesties are well-travelled.  During a break in the fighting, His Majesty Nigel offered Baron Tiberius the position of King’s Champion, and he accepted. Nearby, an enthusiastic rapier list was also enjoying the fine day.

The feast was particularly remarkable.  Prepared by Baron Oakhammer and Baroness Aibhilin and their household and friends, every dish was cooked from period recipes—and every dish was tasty and served at an appropriate temperature in a timely manner. Only the fried Mars bars offered to Head Table diverged from this devotion to authenticity.

A second court was held in the evening.  Duchess Genevieve stepped down as Kingdom Seneschal, her replacement being Baron Corwyn.  Mistress AElfwyn also stepped down as Earl Marshal and Count Edward the Red assumed her duties. Their Majesties also accepted the fealties of the populace, presenting those who had sworn with rings to mark their status. Next, a writ was read bestowing the King’s and Queen’s Favours on the Kingdom of Calontir, who had pledged their troops directly to Their Majesties Nigel and Adrielle at Pennsic (before they had stepped up). The writ was also read out in Calontir court the same day by Lord Rhodri, who visited Ealdromere this past summer. Their Majesties also recognized the petition to retain Ealdormere citizenship by Mistress Eleanor Fairchild, who was attending the event, and Master Gaerred, who could not be there.

The Coronation of Etain au Naval and Valfreya Greenspeare 2008

By Magistra Nicolaa de Bracton

The March of St. Martins hosted the Coronation of Their Majesties Etain and Valfreya on a beautiful September day.  This group always comes up with clever site tokens, and this event was no exception—I don’t think I’ve ever received a pair of knitted slippers as a site token before.   Their Majesties Aaron and Rustique held their final court, which was marked by various functionaries falling over dead throughout.  Having “gotten the message”, they left in a hurry, leaving the crowns on the thrones and the Barons, Baronesses, and the baronial champions to guard the hall.  The wait was not long, however, as Etain strode forward and claimed the King’s crown for his own.  He then called forth his lady wife, Valfreya, to complete the transition.  During their first Court, TRM recognized five people who had been of great help to Her Majesty at Pennsic: Lord Streonwold Wulfesbana was recognized for his general support, and Lady Seonag NicThomais, Lady Rusulka Galbraith, Baroness Adrielle Kerrec, and Baroness Gaerwen were recognized for helping her when she suffered heatstroke on the field.

Spring Coronation 2010

By Magistra Nicolaa de Bracton

The populace gathered on a beautiful spring day to witness the final court of Nigel and Adrielle and the coronation of their successors, Quilliam and Dagmar.   A number of Septentrians received honours in this final court. Rusalka Galbriath was given the Orion for her calligraphy and illumination. Jasmine of House Galbraith was presented with the scroll for the Wolf's Cub awarded to her at Gulf Wars. Augustine von Brixen received a Maiden's Heart.  Mahault of Swynford  was inducted into the Order of the Crucible and was also presented, along with her husband Berend van der Eych, with the King and Queen's Favour—and a token created from the mould used to cast the pommel of the Sword of State.  Finally, with Court seemingly complete, Their Majesties heard a petition from two Laurels of the East Kingdom, and thus placed Rozalynd of Thornaby-on-Tees on vigil for the Laurel.

Nigel and Adrielle then left the Thrones, leaving them guarded by the Chivalry.  The Lawspeaker then convened a Thing (in the tradition of Norse kingdoms) to proclaim a ruler. Prince Quilliam came forth to state his claim, supported by six speakers (including his parents and sister) to attest to his worthiness to rule.  Having been satisfied that the legal requirements were met and that this was the will of the great lords and ladies who spoke, the Lawspeaker then asked the people of Ealdormere whether it was their will that Quiliam rule. They responded with a resounding “aye!” and thus Quilliam took up the Crown and placed it upon his head, and Ealdormere cheered its King.  The Lawspeaker then pointed out that it was not right that he rule alone, and he thus called forth Princess Dagmar.  Once again, six nobles of great worth attested to her virtues, and once again, satisfied that all legal requirements were met, the Lawspeaker asked the will of the people of Ealdormere.  Having been assured of their support, King Quilliam placed the Crown upon Dagmar’s head and thus she took up her place as Queen.  After hearing the fealties of officers, peers, and landed nobility, TRM then recognized Nigel and Adrielle as Earl and Countess.

A number of gifts were given at Coronation, including a rather astounding amount of loot to be used as largess, gifted by House Galbraith and the Hrogn.  Most significantly, the Canton of Swan’s Keep presented the Kingdom with two new portable thrones that can be used upon the field.

Many people also joined the Super Secret Dagmar Fan Club at Coronation, donating a small amount which will aid the Royal Travel Fund.

Spring Coronation 2009

By Magistra Nicolaa de Bracton

Coronation took place in Ben Dunfirth on April 25. The entire event was put together on short notice, but other than  a lack of indoor fighting space, the site was quite pleasant and made more so by the presence of a balcony.

Etian and Valfreya ended their reign with grace, hugs, and a few tears, making way for the coronation of Roak and Jocea.  Wearing Irish-style clothing, their Majesties were crowned in the hall, amongst the people, and received their fealties while standing on a large “rock” brought in for the purpose.

Senex Crepitus ran a lunch counter with especially tasty food, as well as a fundraising raffle.  Several new members went “under the yoke” and were presented with their Roman military tunics as a token of their status.

One other Septentrian highlight was the squiring of Baroness Dagmar Halvdan to Sir Wat of Sarum. (A photo can be found elsewhere in this issue).

During evening Court, Baron Brand stepped down from the office of Trillium Herald just in time to be appointed Queen’s Champion.  Magistra Nicolaa stepped up as Trillium Herald. As his last piece of business, Baron Brand promoted THL Cainder and Lady Liadin to full-status Heralds in token of their long service to the College of Heralds.

Spring Coronation 2008

By Magistra Nicolaa de Bracton

The coronation of TRM Aaron and Rustique took place on a late April day with storms threatening—but never actually materializing—for most of the day.  After King Trumbrand and Queen Kaylah left the thrones (having gifted THL Naga with a favour “or small orang-utan,” among other parting awards), Aaron appeared in Roman clothing, setting the theme for the reign. Having taken the crown, he then crowned Rustique, dressed in Persion clothing, as his Queen.

The day saw several tourneys to determine King’s Champions, all of which were won by Septentrians. On the rapier lists, THL Gareth triumphed, and in thrown weapons, THL Daniel of Whitby won the day.  On the archery field, Baron Percival and Magistra Nicolaa ended the tourney in a tie. It was determined that Magistra Nicolaa would become the champion, as HE Percival has other duties guarding the King’s lands already.  However, a shootoff was held at a devilishly evil smiley face, which Baron Percival won after Magistra Nicolaa shot one arrow that was missing a tip . (ed.  That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.)

Besides the appointment of the three champions determined by tourney, King Aaron appointed Kellen as his armoured combat champion and Queen Rustique appointed Baron Cynred as her armoured combat champion.  THL Eirik was added to the Scroll of Honour for his work on the Ealdormere website.  After the Canton of Monadh presented the Kingdom with new gates for the Ealdormere encampment at Pennsic, the Queen challenged all cantons, households, and groups to help beautify Ealdormere.

It was also announced that Ealdormere will be fighting with the Middle Kingdom this year at Pennsic, and to that end Sir Evander was appointed as War General. Queen Rustique requested that once again a Sea of Red appear on the field, with all fighters wearing the Trillium of Ealdormere.

A subtlety competition also took place at the event, which attracted several enthusiastic entries.  It was won by Lady Medb ingen Dungaile.

The Line of the North Renewed (Coronation of Quilliam and Dagmar, 2010)

By Lady Thora Volundsdottir

This was my first Coronation event and I had a blast. The ceremony for the stepping down of King Nigel and Queen Adrielle was phenomenal. Their final court was exciting with many awards given out in recognition of great deeds having been done with too many to place all here (please see the Kingdom of Ealdor mere website for the correct list). Some truly exceptional gifts were given to the kingdom: Special note on the contribution by Swans Keep. And a wonderful surprise for Baroness Rozalynd of Thornabee on Tees, who was placed on vigil for her Laurel. The truly heartfelt speeches from both our King and Queen brought tears to my eyes and made my heart soar to see such chivalry being dis played. Days like this are why I love playing this game. The ceremony for our new King and Queen was both outstanding and fun. A sense of being at court in the tenth century was felt as our Highness, Prince Quilliam walked into court and laid claim to the throne that is rightfully his. There were many people who stood for our new King and Queen, giving true testament of their loyalty, honesty, bravery and ability to serve their people. As our new monarchs took their rightful places there was much rejoicing by the populace. The weather held out for a great day of outdoor fun for the armoured combatants, the boffer fighters and the fencers. Many enjoyed the warm weather and took time outside to welcome in the spring. Having so many fighters out was inspiring to see. The day went by so quickly too. Before we knew it, it was time for evening court. Our new Royal Majesties sat at their first court; giving credit where credit was due to both the young and not so young. A special surprise was given by the “Super Secret (Queen) Dagmar Fan Club”: a monetary donation to the Kingdom travel fund, received with a smile by Her Royal Majesty. The day was one of great fun had by all and a day I shall always remember.

Event Report: Aaron and Rustique’s Coronation (2001)

On the Coronation of Aaron and Rustique
By Mahualt van der Eych

I pray you all gyue your audience
And here this matter will reuerence,
That of our lyues and endynge shewes
How transytory we be all our dayes.

Of pale and ghostly be our beloued Kynge,
Summer glorie passed in laue and courage,
Layed upon his brow his tarnyshed crowne,
With noble Qwen, fade as floure in Maye.

To Greyfells, by the water's edge,
Travelled divers and loyal subjects,
To honoure he who, wyth glorious myte,
Commanded Ealdormere.

Kynge Roak bade welcome us,
Wyth kynde and open wyse,
Qwen Carlotta, most beauteous still,
Face coloured full faire, did us greet.

"Behold my fine bolde knyghttys,
Strong of martial countenance,
In mine aged descent, did offer me great soulace,
And stood mighty, fierce at war."

With Lords of his lygeaunce, with justicez and gentle laurels,
Did Kynge Roak honoure Lady Helen of Greyfells,
And did give unto her a Laurel,
For wyseste and worthyest and wyghteste of hanndes.

Greate honoure awarded was that daye,
And great thankys gyven to divers vertuus nobles. 1
Many were the joyous faces turnd to baske,
Radiant glory shone from Roak and beauteous Carlotta.

Pall and ghastly saddnys many harts did fyll
For all our Kynges strength and blod soon stood still,
Greyf struck Carlotta, wept cold tears that daye,
By gracious mercy our Qwen too was swept away. 2

The empty crown, cold and byter thing,
Upon the thrown of Ealdormere did poorly laye,
Till Aaron, noble kinsman of our Kynge
Did rightly honour and destiny fullfyl. 3

Rustique, his noble lady and Qwen,
Fairest flour but on the field growes,
Shall graece the newe wrought
Throne of Ealdormere. 4

For thyr glory and joye,
Gentill knyghttes to tourney did go,
And wyth reuerence and ryotte all,
Bravely dysplayed the might of  Ealdormere.

To Kynges Towne did we small troupe salle,
For merriement and sweetmeats did we set forthe,
Thorfinna, wyth her ayxe in hande,
Did many a Celtic dauncer meete. 5

A gloryous feaste was layed afore us,
Manye and divers dishys did we devoure,
Wyth myrthe and wyth melodye of mynstrals noble,
My lord and I stuft fyt to burst seams.

I thankee for thine audience,
And here this matter anon will end,
Know that of our lyues and endyngs shewes,
How transytory we be all daye.

Colyne’s Annotations to Mahault’s most excellent verse:
Halfdan Blackanvil was made a Court Baron.
Due to a pact made at Pennsic, Roak had to make a blood sacrifice to sustain our land, and was burned in a wicker man.
Rustique approached the Thrones, where she found a frog. Upon kissing it Aaron appeared in a cloud of smoke.
New Thrones have been crafted by Dusty’s most talented Lady (her name unknown to me).

A group of us went hunting for ice cream and found ourselves in the middle of a Celtic street festival.

For the Coronation of King Thorbjorn Osis, 06 May A.S. XXX

By Master Hector of the Black Height

Oars!
Let backs swift strain against the oars
Like arms have strained against the pell;
We strike forth fast to southern shores
Where legends loud we soon will tell,
Of our own making, ours and his.
Pull the oar, now pull and glide,
We soon shall reach the southern side
Where we will land and then shall sing:
Today my Jarl becomes our King,
Today my Jarl becomes our King.

Arms!
Let our swords rest while oars we pull,
For soon bright blades shall rest no more;
Our horns with ale a Queen will fill
To quench the thirst of men at war;
A mighty thirst that, ours and his.
Draw the burnished blades anew
That all the Southron folk will view
When we do land and proudly sing:
Today my Jarl becomes our King,
Today my Jarl becomes our King.

Voices!
Let milk-white clouds sail on our cheers,
Let skalds seek out new words of praise.
Tales of this dawn will ring for years,
Let none forget this day of days;
A day of glory, ours and his.
Hear our voices, battle-wise,
This day which let forth triumph cries
As to far shores his ship we bring:
Today my Jarl becomes our King,
Today my Jarl becomes our King.

Names!
Let these proud names be heard again;
Raedmund, Berus, Worrigen,
Grimbold, Mort and Horgarth Thegn,
Nolgen, Zadok, Etien;
Let heroes' names ring, ours and his.
Urich, Pile and Jock, men sworn
To stand and fall with Thorbjorn,
Which buys the right these words to sing:
Today my Jarl becomes our King,
Today my Jarl becomes our King.

Legends!
Today let skald-fame ring and grow
As fits a day of triumph bright
For Robert Fitzhugh's squire does go
To take the crown that is his right
As honour marks it, ours and his.
With Dagan, Rolac, Coley stands
The chieftain o'er the warrior bands
Whose foes shall feel the ash-wood sting;
Today my Jarl becomes our King,
Today my Jarl becomes our King.

Hearts!
Soon to a King we shall be squired
And to the Crown we shall be sworn;
By Valthjona now inspired,
For Caitlin these proud surcoats borne,
The black and silver, our and his.
Arnora's grace and Utsi's smiles
Will cheer us o'er the many miles
As we to such hearts tribute bring;
Today my Jarl becomes our King,
Today my Jarl becomes our King.

Land!
The roar of surf upon the sand
Is drowned by voices roaring loud;
As oars are shipped, with swords to hand
We peer across the cheering crowd
Who offer welcome, ours and his.
Harcourt's face, Ihashi's cheers
Are with them too, across the years
That rich with legends new take wing;
Today my Jarl becomes our King,
Today my Jarl becomes our King.

David and the Coronation Tourney

By Master Hector of the Black Height

In Comar's tournament began
Our Prince and loyal Cordigan
Against two stalwart Southron foe
Was serried David and d'Arnot
Prince David grasped his sword and shield
With halberd d'Arnot took the field
Against two men and their swords three
Did David seek a victory

Let cheers now ring for our new-crowned King!
Waeshael!

A fanfare spurred them to the test
The two sides closed in martial geste
As sword-blows rained down right and left
A cunning strike shook halberd's heft
The polearm fell 'midst Southern men
Disarméd was Lord Cordigan
His honour urged him quit the field
But one scarce hope he would not yield

Let cheers ring true for the Southern two!
Waeshael!

Prince David pressed forth gallantly
E'en though his one short sword met three
He met each sword blow with its kind
And kept blows from d'Arnot behind
Disarmed as the fight began
The Prince did shield good Cordigan
He closed his foe and hotly pressed
That Faeringold might safely rest

Pray give a cheer for Ealdormere!
Waeshael!

He turned the blows with skill and might
Our Prince did turn the tourney fight
And steered the Southron pair away
That de Arnot might join the fray
For as he steered the pair around
The Southron foe did give their ground
And David stood where foeman's blow
Had been the bane of brave d'Arnot

Let joyous calls ring 'midst these walls!
Waeshael!

With subtle tap of nimble toe
Our Prince kicked polearm to d'Arnot
The Southron pair by one hand pressed
Could not long match the North's two best
As foes did fall, each one by one
Gave praise to noble Cordigan
And final combat, singly fought
Gave David triumph, finely wrought

For honour true cheer Northern two!
Waeshael!

And as the latter foeman fell
And as loud cheers the air did swell
All did reflect on Prince most bold
And graceful fight, without a hold
In which he steered the action so
To arm the once disarmed d'Arnot
And thus there was true glory won
By a Prince's gift to his champion

Let his praises rise and shake the skies!
Waeshael!

Coronation of Malik and Genevieve (Sep 18, 2004)

By THLaird Colyne Stewart

Thorfinna and I drove up to Ashford-on-Avon with Sir Evander MacLachlan, and arrived early. Duchess Eanor of Amberhall (visiting fromt he Middle Kingdom) had a table and asked us to sit with her, which we gladly did. Eander and I dumped our armour in the fighting area and found out that for the day's tournament you had to be sponsored by a Lady of the Rose or a Viscountess. Eanor said she would be my sponsor, so I was set, but with only five Ladies present, and 32 fighters signing up, they dumped that qualifier for the tourney.

In morning court I was Viking #6. When Berus and Marion stepped down, it was to assist Harold Hardrada in Norway. Thirteen brave souls were called and the King, Queen, their Champions and eight others went with them. Malik, who had been the first to say he would go, was entreated to instead stay and claim the thrones of Ealdormere. Which of course he did!

For me the highlights of the two courts held that day was seeing Oxana getting her AoA, and seeing Berus and Marion made a Duke and Duchess.

Ah, then the fighting...

In the first round I drew Kasimir. I was so worried about his slot shot that I left my head open. I never even threw a shot.

In the second round I drew Baron Konrad. At least he had to work to get me, but I still can't figure him out. Someday!!

So just like that I was out of the tournament. Eanor was very gracious when I returned her token and said that I had brought her much honour. She also gave me a token to keep. It was very nice. (Especially since I didn't feel that I *had* brought her honour.)

I then fought pick ups with Wat and with Wulfgang and did much better. I think I have a mental block fighting when it counts. When I know I'm being watched or when I really want to win (like my White Bear Fian fights) I seem to fight poorly. I'm going to have to work on that.

Hung out for the rest of the afternoon with various friends. Totally forgot about the seneschal's meeting so didn't go.

Saw Wat become Cennedi's man-of-arms. Happy for him, but my plans of making him a MacLachlan are dashed! Curses! Foiled again!

Went out to dinner which was terrible. The Galbraiths were going out to eat at Crabby Joe's, the same restuarant that Thorfinna and I wanted take Evander to. So they graciously expanded their reservartion by ten people (since other people had asked to come with us). When we arrived it took twenty minutes to get menus, another twenty to place our orders, and at least twenty to get our bills at the end. Many people were not happy with their food. My gravy smelled like puke, portions for some people were small, etc. I mean, Berus didn't finish his steak!! That's unheard of. At least four people got sick from the food.

When I paid my bill, the clerk asked me how everything was. I said it could have been better. He pretended not to have heard me.

A bad end to what otherwise has been an excellent day.

Seeing Stars and Laying Foundations (Coronation of Berus II and Marion II, April 23, 2004)

By THLaird Colyne Stewart

No one can predict where fate will steer you. As a boy, labouring for my father as he collected taxes and counted money, I never dreamed my life would turn out as it did. That I would one day leave behind the realm of money and comfort for the hard life of the battle field. My father disinherited me when me found out I was to become a soldier for King David II, and true to his word, he and I are dead to each other. I'll admit, some of the accusations he threw at me were true: that I was a foolish youth, with a head full of tales of glory. However, I also felt the need to fight against the English, and to drive them from Scotland.

I dreamed of glory and honour.

What I found was death and destruction.

Life as a soldier for a war-king on the move was harsh and miserable. Sleeping exposed to the elements, rain soaking your blanket (if you were lucky enough to have one), food scarce. I had few friends in the army, as most resented me for my more affluent past. I did make one friend—a highlander—who tried to teach me the bardic arts. As supportive as he was, even he winced when I tried to sing. He also tried to teach me Gaelic, but in that I also failed.

At Neville’s Cross, we encountered the English forces. King David II was captured; my highland friend—and many others—were killed. Some of us managed to escape, but now found ourselves hunted criminals. In desperation we became a band of gallowglass—
mercenaries—and we sold our services to the highest bidder. With this company I fought in Ireland and France. Finally, some of us found our way to Ealdormere.

For so long I had had nothing to fight for but money. But here...here there were glorious and honourable knights who led by example, who shone with courtesy both on and off the field. Wiping the mud from my brow I watched them in tournaments and felt something begin to beat again in my heart. I followed these knights to war, fought beside them on the fields of Pennsic, drank with them at their camps.

Now, three years after coming to these lands to escape the Black Death, I have found new life.

One of the knights whom I admired so much, had agreed to take me on as a squire. This knight I saw as a paragon of virtue, a bright star amongst a glowing constellation of Ealdormere's chivalry.

And what was more, he was also from Scotland.

At the Coronation of Berus II and Marion II we agreed to publicly announce our new arrangement. That day also seemed so far off, but finally, it was upon us.

In the weeks leading up to the event, my lady spent many long hours tailoring new clothes for me to wear. With the help of our friend Mahault van der Eych, she created a complete set of court garb, such as would be seen in the high courts of Europe, complete from hood to leather shoes. It was a remarkable change from the peasant’s clothing I usually wore. As well, she laboured over fires and benches and produced two belts, adorned with acorns and stars, with pewter cast buckles and belt ends. For our friend Mahault, and her husband Berend, were also to be made squires at Coronation—to Duke Sir Finnvarr de Taahe.

(You may ask what I was doing all this time? As Thorfinna was so occupied, the responsibilities of maintaining our keep fell completely to me. I still think I got off easy.)

Upon the morning of Coronation, we set out from the keep of Sir Evander MacLachlan and THL Melusine de la Rose. Together we traveled to Skraeling Althing to the grand hall where Berus II and Marion II were to be crowned later that day. We arrived just before court was to begin, and we quickly changed. I received many compliments on the clothing Thorfinna had crafted. I was very proud of the work she had done.

Court was called, and Their Majesties Cennedi and Susanna took the dais. They presented many awards, prominent among them in my mind being William Meriic made a Lord, Evander's presentation of a King's Favour, Erick of Longacres and Tesla de Chardon made a Baron and Baroness of the Court, and of course, Baroness Eleanor Cadfan elevated into the Order of the Pelican. Their Majesties then agreed that suitable Heirs to the throne had been found, and that by the oath given at Their coronation, this meant they must now lay aside the crowns. They did so, leaving them and the thrones in the care of the Order of Chivalry.

Marion II then swept regally into the room, followed by four of her sons, and their uncle Lord Etienne du Naval. She confronted the Order of Chivalry, pressed her claim on the throne, and told them that they stood between Her and something that was Hers. The knights quickly made way as Marion approached the throne. She laid a crown upon Her own brow, and was recognized as Her Dread Majesty. A rabble (comprised of many Galbraiths saying "Rabble, rabble") then walked by, with Berus II walking with them. He stopped shocked at seeing His lady wife crowned upon the dais and approached her to ask what transpired. She explained to Him that she had claimed the throne, and that Her need of him was no more. Like a spurned lovesick puppy, Berus turned to go, but Their sons raised such a ruckus that Marion II called Her husband back to Her side, and acknowledged that She could not reign without Him. He then kneeled and She placed the crown upon his head.

When court was suspended until the evening, the fighters headed for a bridge that had been erected in the hall. (This bridge was to become known as Dame Eleanor's bridge, upon Lord Baldric's suggestion, in honour of Her Excellency.) However, before the battle commenced, Sir Finnvarr called together those who wished to witness the squiring of Berend and Mahault van der Eych. They gave their oath of fealty and were presented with the belts Thorfinna had crafted for them. They were also presented with tools with which to take care of their steeds (brushes, etc) and a length of fabric.

A long battle then ensued as thirty fighters took turn upon the bridge to face opponent after opponent. It was a long process, and in the end, Lord Baldric was the last to stand upon the bridge, though Sir Nigel MacFarlane had the longest run of victories.

At the end of the bridge battle, Evander called for witnesses to my own squiring. He asked if it was still my intention to become his squire, and I affirmed that it was. He then presented me with several pieces of regalia. He said that as a squire, it was my duty to ride with him as battle, and therefore he would give me spurs. The spurs given me were crafted by Lord Verenko (my squire-brother), and they were exact duplicates of Evander's (though silver instead of gold). The chain placed about my neck was crafted by Lord Brandt das Lederwerker (another squire-brother). I knew that a belt had been commissioned for me, but I also knew that its construction had been delayed by a fire, so I was not sure if I would receive one at the ceremony. However, my friends surprised me when Evander pulled out a beautiful belt crafted by Berend, Mahault and Brandt. The belt incorporated my oath to Evander (fealty, sword in battle, counsel), as well as elements of my heraldry (a fox) and Evander's (a castle). After my lady had placed it about my waist I knelt, clasped Evander's sword, and swore my oath to him. He then swore an oath to me. At this point, my eldest squire-brother, Tiberius Justus Britannicus, pulled a mount from his belt and gave it to me as a gift. He also told everyone present that I was currently challenging into the White Bear Fian, which is a Septentrian fighting order. (To enter you must defeat a member in a best two out of three trial of arms. You could keep challenging until you succeeded. I had already fought on challenge at Septentria's 25th Anniversary Event, against Baron Konrad Matthias Jaeger von Dubrau, which I had lost.) Tiberius took a knife and cut the belt end from his belt. He presented me with it, saying he would not replace it until I had successfully entered the Fian, as he knew I someday would.

I was very moved by all of this, and generally just kind of stood their grinning like a fool.

I am truly blessed to have friends—and now family—such as this.

The fighting then moved out of doors, but I only fought two individuals before managing to throw out my back. Rushing inside, I collapsed to the floor, where Baldric and Baroness Freya immediately appeared as if by magic. As Baldric quickly removed my kit, Freya toweled my back and had a cloak spread on the ground for me to lie upon. She gave me instructions on exercises to do to relieve the pain, and I am pleased to say that they worked. I would like to take this opportunity to thank both of them for their kind attention.

Feast was a glorious affair, though the hall was crowded. I enjoyed most of the dishes, especially the final desert. During feast, many songs were sung and stories told, and Houses Hrogn and Galbraith presented our new Monarchs with many, many, MANY gifts for them to use during Their reign.

At feast's conclusion Berus II and Marion II continued Their court, and created Cennedi and Susanna as a Count and Countess of Ealdormere. Susanna was also made a Lady of the Rose. This was all met with a standing ovation.

Truly, for many reasons, it will be a day that lives long in this ex-mercenary's memory.

Splendour in Thorold (The Coronation of Cennedi and Susanna, Sep 20, 2003)

By THLaird Colyne Stewart

Many were the sights of splendour I saw upon the elevation of Cennedi and Susanna to the lupine thrones of Ealdormere.

I saw a great hall, adorned with glass chandeliers; a hall with vast hard wood floors.

I saw Edouard and Genevieve hold their last court. I saw them step down from the thrones. I saw Genevieve raised to the station of countess. I saw His Grace and Her Excellency given a standing ovation by those so assembled for the day.

I saw the Order of Chivalry protect the thrones of Ealdormere, until an heir should present himself.

Lo, I saw such an heir. Sir Rory Cennedi stepped forward with three attendants. The first carried his sword, the second his shield, the third his helm. He presented himself to the knights and masters-of-arms who protected his thrones. He showed his sword, and Duke Sir Hasdrubal did recognize it as the sword with which Cennedi had won a crown tournament to become the kingdom’s heir. And he did show his shield to the Lord Trillium Herald, who did recognize the arms upon it as those of Sir Rory Cennedi. And he presented his helm to Sir Mordain Blackcloak who recognized upon it the insignia of Duke Sir Finnvarr, himself, and his former squire Rory Cennedi.

And so I saw Sir Rory Cennedi crowned as king, and I saw him crown his mother Susanna the Unyielding as his queen. Many in the hall were impressed by their manner and demeanour.

I saw sugared candy flow from the hands of Susanna’s attendants as they processed from the hall to the raised voices of those assembled singing ‘Scarlet Blazing Banner’. And lo, one candy did fly through the air and land in my hand.

I saw many fighters gather upon the list field to partake in feats of arms. I found myself facing a visiting lord from Calontir upon the field and we fought long under the sun. When this day was done this lord and I had pledged friendship to each other with promises of shelter should the need ever arise.

I saw the Order of Chivalry hold the field against all comers. Long and hard did they battle as hardy knights and masters-of-arms faced a long line of eager warriors. I myself fought several knights, my most memorable against Sir Evander MacLachlan. To be delicate, a blow was struck slightly lower than intended, and the good knight’s voice was an octave higher for a time.

I saw the first court of our new monarchs, and well will they reign. I saw many awards presented, though being tired from the feats of arms I neglected to write down the names of those so honoured. One I can recall, as it was well deserved, was an Award of Arms to Lady Catharine of Eoforwic.

All these things and more I saw.

A Rising Sun and a Blooming Flower (The Coronation of Edouard Beausoliel and Genevieve de la Rosse, May 3, 2003)

By THLaird Colyne Stewart

The third day of May saw the accension of Edouard Beausoliel and Genevieve de Rosse to the lupine thrones of Ealdormere. The crowning ceremony took place in the Shire of Trinovantia Nova, and many gentles from across Septentria were present. The cantons of Ardchreag, Eoforwic and Vest Yorvik dominated one section of the hall in a vast array of chairs, rugs, carpets and consumables.

Septentrians were prominent at the event on the field, in court and around the hall. Master Hector of the Black Height announced processions for court and a bardic circle grew up around Mistress Marian of Heatherdale’s merchant table. Lord Thorolfr smithr of Eoforwic was on the field with Baroness Domhnail, both resplendant in scarlet tabards. Sir Evander MacLachlan was also on the field, the Septentrian favour hung about his neck swinging to and fro as his sword and shield flashed in the sun.

Though just recovering from a very bad cold, Baron Siegfried Brandbeorn still took part in an armoured combat tourney, where in the final two out of three bout he faced Count Sir Aaron Preslee Worgansson. Both fought well, and in the end Siegfried was victorious.

During morning court, Lady Isotta Gianglifiazzi was called to kneel before the king and queen, who bestowed upon her an Award of the Scarlet Banner. Baroness Adrielle Kerrec was called by the Order of the Pelican, and Their Majesties honoured their request that she be put on vigil for elevation to that honoured order.

I continued my recruitment of fighters to represent the Games Guild in the tournies to take place at the Guilds Day Festival in November. By the end of the day I had my team of three, consisting of THL Richard Larmer, Count Sir Aaron Preslee Worgansson and Sir Evander MacLachlan.

It has beenr eported to me that during the evening court, Rosalia dei Querini was awarded an Award of Arms for her efforts in organizing the Casa Loma demos held during February.

Great Sarnac’s Ghost (Coronation of Roak and Arlette, September 2002)

By THLaird Colyne Stewart

On September 28 there was a hunt held in the Canton of Caer Draeth. The Khan and his Kashek (personal guard) were hunting deer, in anticipation of feeding venison to the masses at feast that night. Good gentles from across Ealdormere, and from points beyond, gathered in anticipation. Thorfinna and I waded through the crowd on various missions. I had Ursi to deliver, and subscriptions to hound for, specific photographs to take, officers to speak to and rattan to buy. As I was perusing the stock of the excellent Syr Ed the Red, a herald announced that court was to be held imminently behind the hall. Paying Ed for his wares, Thorfinna and I found members of Ardchreag with which to sit. (Several from the Chreag were in attendance that day, including: Wat of Sarum, Wulfgang Donnerfaust, Jean-Margaret Donnerfaust, Berend and Mahault van der Eych, Eanor of Amberhall, Siegfriend Brandbeorn, Rhys ap Bledri, Vlad Blahuciak, Kennric Manning, Tatiiana, Iolanda de Albornoz, Eirik Andersen, Ivanna the Oblivious, Brandt das Lederwerker, Gailana Dunkel Pfere, Katerina du Nord, Alaani, Damara of Stormhaven, Fursto de Robnye, Raffe Scholemaystre, Luke Wolfsonne, Marian of Heatherdale, Piero di Paxiti da Vincenza, William the Younger, Thorfinna and myself.)

The Khaton arrived and bide us sit. She said that the Khan was still on the hunt with Their Highnesses but was expected soon. Before long Prince Roak and Princess Arlette arrived on horseback and seemed surprised that Sarnac Khan was not already in court. They said he had ridden ahead of them. Her Majesty Joliecia was not concerned, for as she said, the Khan had his Kashek and his Champion with him, so his safety was assured.

The Kingdom bard, THL Gwerydd verch Rhys, then sang a song of the hunt, and as she finished Eanor of Amberhall, Khan’s Champion, rode into court and threw herself at the Khaton’s feet. She groveled and debased herself, for, she said, something terrible had happened. The Kashek then came into view carrying a body on a shield. The body was clad in the Khan’s armour and an arrow had pierced his helm.

Kayla the Cheerful, Queen’s Champion, chastised Eanor for failing in her duties to protect her Sovereign, and took the sheath from her axe as a repentant Eanor bore her neck for execution. Then, suddenly, Sarnac’s spirit, dressed all in white, appeared from nowhere and called for Kayla to hold her hand. He said that he had died through no fault of his Champion for the arrow had been born of the darkness and no mortal could have thwarted it. His ancestors had granted him permission to come back to complete unfinished business and the last court of Sarnac and Joliecia began.

Three gentles from Ardchreag were granted their Award of Arms that day, being Wulfgang and Jean-Margaret Donnerfaust and Crispinus Spellar. THL Aenaes Oakhammer presented Their Majesties with handcrafted boxes to store the Crowns of State. Lady Alyce de Sheppey was inducted into the Order of the Wain, Tabitha the Cook was given a grant of Arms, Yoshikuri Nagayo Dono, Lady Cera of the Middle Kingdom and Count Kildare Silverwolf Thorkillson were given a Scarlet Banner, THL Randwulf Widefarer, Master Hector of the Black Height, Eanor of Amberhall and Lady Rachael Catherine McLellan were given a personal augmentation of arms, THL Kayla the Cheerful was given a Queen’s favour, Master Konrad Mattias Jaegar was inducted into the Order of Thorbjorn’s Hammer and Trumbrand the Wanderer was inducted into the Order of the Chivalry as a Master-of-Arms.

It was not the most orderly court, as many people were quite spooked by having a shade sitting on the throne. The mammoth wandering about behind the Royal walls was also disconcerting. Earl Syr David ran into court at one point to announce that Valharic Aurelius Caligula, Caesar of the Middle, had died. As such, all agreements between Sarnac and Valharic were broken. This pleased Lady Rachael Catherine McLellan greatly as it meant her daughter, who had been claimed by Valharic as his concubine, could return home to take up her chores again. There was apparently a large pile of laundry awaiting her.

The Khan and Khaton then released their Champions. Roak and Arlette were sworn in as Their Majesties of Ealdormere, hearing the oaths of the Barons, Baronesses and Peers of our Kingdom. Sarnac Khan was then taken to be laid to rest.

Word has a way of traveling fast, and soon Sarnac’s northern cousin, a Norseman who looked remarkable like him, had arrived to investigate his kinsman’s death.

Though the populace was sad to loose their Khan and Khaton they were pleased with their Majesties Roak and Arlette and the rest of the day was spent in merriment. There were equestrian activities, archery, thrown weapons, fencing, fighting and much more. Thorfinna and I had to actually leave court before it was completed as we had promised to do some children’s activities for two hours. We sat upstairs in the hall, surrounded by rambunctious youngsters and played games and told stories until finally they all left in Quest of the Purple dragon.

We then wandered outside and watched some of the armoured combat. Both Wulfgang Donnerfaust and Wat of Sarum made it to the final five in the newbie tournament, though the final came down to a young lord named Tarkwyn and Eogan de Moray. In the two out of three final bout Tarkwyn emerged victorious. In the ribbon tournament Baron Siegfriend Brandbeorn took the day with eighteen victories.

We spent the rest of the day visiting and talking until it was time for feast. Alaani, Berend, Mahault, Thorfinna and I sat together while Her Grace Eanor served us. It was an excellent meal, prepared by Lady Seonag nicThomais and Lord Streonwald Wulfsbana and was so large that no one went away hungry. The food wouldn’t stop coming!

I then helped schlep dirty dishes up the kitchen and was done in time for evening court. Their Majesties and Their Excellencies of Septentria had an interesting court—for a while they took turns handing out awards. Very odd. Those handed out by Cynred Thegn and Baroness Gaerwen included: personal Baronial tokens for THL Aenaes Oakhammer and Hughie of Monadh, a Bear’s Claw for Charles the Clerk and a Bear’s Heart for Maggie Brodie. Those handed out by Their Majesties Roak and Arlette included: Sarnac and Joliecia’s County, Count Aaron Worgansson named King’s Champion, Lord Richard Larmer named Queen’s Champion, Lady Chiara de Montepulciano named kingdom bard, THL Anne Grey’s induction into the White Wolf Fian, Mistress AElfwyn of Longwood’s re-induction into the White Wolf Fian, Sage of Ben Dunfirth given her Award of arms, Lord Ulvar van der Nederlanden’s induction into the Order of Thorbjorn’s Hammer and Countess Joleicia’s induction into the Order of the Rose.

Two matters of international relations occurred during these courts. Master Kiernan and William the Black, both of the new Kingdom of Lochac, brought greetings from Their Majesties Alfar and Elspeth, as well as the gift of a kangaroo. These diplomats and their words of thanks for Ealdormere’s gifts and thoughts during Lochan’s first coronations were treated to much wassailing and cheering. Cynred and Gaerwen gave them both tokens, for themselves and for Their Majesties Lochac. Also, Katerina du Nord read a letter from Prince Raynar of the Principality of Cynagua (of the West Kingdom) pledging his eternal friendship with Ealdormere. This was also greeted with much cheering.

Once court ended I handed out a few more promotional Ursi, talked with Hughie of Monadh about his canton’s history and finally left (most reluctantly).

Homorri for Ealdormere (Coronation of Sarnac and Joliecia, April 27, 2002)

By THLaird Colyne Stewart

News had been coming for months that our King and Queen, brave Aaron and gentle Rustique, would have to leave us on a quest, and many of the people of Ardchreag traveled far to Rising Waters to see them set off. It was a glorious day for traveling, and it was good. Their Majesties held their final court where special awards were given and gifts received. Baron Foote, pushing before him a monstrous cart hung with bells, told all how Aaron must leave us to fulfill a wise woman’s predictions. For their true love to remain, Aaron and Rustique must abdicate the Thrones, and set off together to return the empties (handily strung on a string by the good Foote). Their was much cheering for the newly non-Royals, and they were pelted with many frogs (for Aaron was a Frog Prince when first he won Crown Tourney). As they left the keep Sir Has was heard to remark, “Preslee has left the building.”

Sarnac Ba’adur was then called to claim the Crown of Ealdormere and keep our lands safe from invaders. His Lady wife was heralded into court by drummers and dancers and much fanfare. Together they recited their pledge to protect Ealdormere and serve her people and it was well said. They then called forth the Great Officers, Barons, and the members of the three Great Peerage Orders: Chivalry, Laurel and Pelican.

When Baron Brand of Ben Dunfirth took his oath of fealty he presented Sarnac with a bag containing the heads of our enemies. Sarnac gave these heads to the keeping of Master Hector, biding him place them on pikes so that all the enemies of Ealdormere could see the fate that awaited them. Master Hector, the ever-subtle, then shook the bag at Caesar, King of the Middle Kingdom, who was in attendance with members of his Legions. The crowd chuckled as we realized that the whispers were likely true, that we would fight with the East this year, should peace between the Middle and east prove impossible.

And indeed, at the evening court, it was declared that there would be War, and that Ealdormere would fight for the East. So Chreaggers prepare thyselves. Weither you fight with Kingdom, Baronial or Household armies, patch your armour and sharpen your swords. Soon the Wolves of the North shall sweep South and devour all who would oppose us.

Generals were chosen to lead us, one of whom comes from our own lands, Her Grace, Duchess Eanor of Amberhall, who was also named as our new Khan’s Champion.

And so the Line of the North is secured.
