The History of Trinovantia Nova

In ancient times did a lot of real nice people form trinovantia
and it was was good
Then we had some infighting
and then we kissed and made up
then we had a midrealm crown tournement, which Comar I won, and Finn came second.
Then we had some infighting
and then we kissed and made up
and we had the first winter war
Then we had some infighting
and then we kissed and made up
The we started have storming of the gate
Then we had some infighting
and then we kissed and made up
The we tried to become a barony
Then we had some infighting
and then we kissed and made up

And everyone lived happily ever after.

Winter War 2009

By Magistra Nicolaa de Bracton

As has become customary, Winter War was the first large event of the spring and the first chance for armoured combatants to begin to practice their melee skills for the upcoming warm weather campaigns.

Ten teams entered the melee round robin tourney.  Eight of these teams consisted of five unbelted fighters and two more were all-Chivalry teams of four fighters.  Three of the unbelt teams (Septentria-Bjarn, Septentria-Tiberius, and Skeldergate) were from Septentria, as well as one of the Chivalry teams (consisting of His Majesty Etian, Berus, Nigel, and Worgen).   Other teams included the second Chivalry team headed by His Highness Roak, two teams from Ramshaven, one from Ben Dunfirth, one from Trinovantia, and one from Rising Waters.

Commenting on the fighting, THL Justinian, who coordinated the tourneys, mentioned that all fought with chivalry and grace, with few harsh words in the midst of some very hard fighting.

The team commanded by Lord Bjarn was victorious in the round robin section, followed closely by THL Tiberius’ team.  The tourney was particularly remarkable for the appearance of Baron Percival in his first melee tourney.  His report is included below.

Another highlight was the squiring of THL Berend to Sir Nigel.  Berend is Nigel’s first squire, and the ceremony also marked the foundation of Nigel’s new household.  Their Majesties also made Guillaume, lord to Countess Jolecia (and as of very recently, her husband) a citizen of Ealdormere.  He went on to assist with the tourney, and will likely be seen frequently from now on.

Fighting was not the only attraction, however; Baroness Tsivia spent the day sitting her vigil for the Order of the Pelican.  THL Anne Tinker coordinated the vigil, including lovely food and special “mouchoir” attendants with tissues in case the vigilee happened to get teary-eyed. (They were needed a number of times during the day and during the subsequent ceremony itself).  A number of dignitaries from as far away as An Tir and Calontir made the journey to take part in Tsivia’s elevation, and she was showered by many fabulous gifts.

A large number of rapier fighters also turned out to play all day in a large list.  The Daughters of the North ran their yearly fundraising raffle.  A number of A&S classes were offered, and for much of the day, the band Talbot’s Cross provided live music to event-goers.

The highlight of Court was, of course, Tsivia’s elevation.  She processed down the aisle, resplendent in a red cotehardie, under a canopy of crossed banners held by members of the Chirugeonate.  Seven speakers spoke to the virtues of faith, hope, charity, temperance, justice, fortitude, and prudence, and with each virtue came the presentation of a gift.  Mistress Fiona was there in spirit, as a member of her household carried an urn with some of her ashes, and Tsivia was invested with a medallion that once she had worn.  The ladies with the tissues were very busy during the ceremony.  When it came time to read the scroll, it was revealed that there were in fact two scrolls, technically “promissories” — one with text in the shape of a Pelican by Lady Cerridwyn, and the other, consisting of text only, by Tsivia’s old friend Master Robert of Two Cliffs (which nearly caused Tsivia to fall over when she heard the name).

One comment heard during the ceremony was that many enjoyed the “old style” approach with lots of pomp and circumstance.  Congratulations to the newest Pelican and way-back Septentrian!

Winter War 2008

 By Magistra Nicolaa de Bracton

Melee season officially opened with Winter War on March 1, held this year at a new site in St. Thomas that offered multiple rooms for various activities and the ever-popular hot showers.  Lots of good, clean fighting was observed as fighters knocked the rust off their melee armour. Rapier combatants also enjoyed a full day of combat, this time in a room that also featured the bar.

Winter War has gained a reputation as a golden opportunity for the upcoming War Kings of the East and/or Middle to come to Ealdormere in search of allies.  This year both TRH of the East, Konrad and Brenwen, and TRH of the Middle, Lars and Tessa, were in attendance, and there was much exchanging of gifts.

A gathering of archers and thrown weapons participants was held in an effort to lay the ground work for a Kingdom Corps of missile weapon enthusiasts. Discussion included ideas on ranking systems, skill sets to be included in a ranking system and possible names and other details. More meetings and discussions will follow. A Yahoo group for archers (ealdormerearchery) has been created and is open for all to join.

Several pieces of business of note were conducted during Court.  First, the shires of Flaming Sky and Noergate were formally dissolved and their citizens incorporated into the Shire of Brennistein Vatn, the culmination of the “Ubershire” project to bring all Northern shires under one single banner.  Another high note was the naming of THLord Wat of Sarum as the captain of the Unbelt team for Pennsic.  Two Peers were made, as Rachael Catherine McLellan was added to the Order of the Laurel and Nadrah bint Valizan al-Garnitiyya was elevated to the order of the Pelican.  Both sat their vigils during the day.

The Footman’s Tale (Winter War, March 5, 2005)

By THLaird Colyne Stewart

I went for the knighting, my lord. As you know I took a wound in the side during a foray into the East Kingdom the week before. The tygre managed to break two of my ribs, he did, and as such I thought I would spend the day in rest. But milady, well, she’s a fighter too, as you also know, my lord. And she was chomping at the bit to fight herself, since she missed the afore mentioned foray. And we did both want to see the knighting. So we set out for the Shire of Trinovantia Nova, lugging her armour. Or rather she lugged her armour, for I couldn’t lift much more than her half-gauntlets my lord, shamed as I am to admit it.

When we arrived we found that the hall was already full, but we managed to wiggle our seats down near the list field. Milady quickly strapped on her armour and waded out into the fracas, marking her return after a knee injury side-lined her for two years or there abouts. There were plenty of fighters on the field that day, my lord, including many visitors from the Middle Kingdom, including the newly knighted Sir Jocelyn le Jongleur, as well as the King and the Prince of the Middle, Sir Brannos and Sir Alaric le Fevre.

Generally I spent the day sitting in that chair, watching everyone else battle and fight and prepare themselves for War should the East and Middle clash yet again. And I know that envy is a sin, my lord, but I must admit I felt much envy that day for those in the lists. I hungered for a sword in my hand, and wondered just what it was I used to do at events before I learned the noble art of combat.

I watched as several good gentles did authorize in new forms of combat. The first was Herr Wulfgang Donnerfaust, squire-brother to Kasimir, who did authorize in great sword that day. The others I saw, my lord, were all of House Galbraith. For Nigel of House Galbraith did authorize in sword and shield, while Lady Þorfinna gráfeldr was authorized in dagger and Anna became the second Galbraith to ever authorize in fencing.

I also watched the long battles, my lord, and predominate in my mind is the bridge battle. This, my lord, was an unlimited resurrection battle, which lasted for forty minutes and was a test of endurance for even the hardiest warriors.

But all this is a digression, my lord, for it’s the knighting of which I meant to speak. For the Honourable Lord Kasimir of Stargard had been placed on vigil, to be elevated into the grand Order of Chivalry. You know of whom I speak, my lord, for this is the same Kasimir who made such an excellent showing at our kingdom’s last Crown Tournament. And so the good Vendel did hold the field against all comers, my lord, and battle long and hard he did, until all were satisfied. He then retired to a yurt which the Rozakii had erected, and there he heard the words of wisdom from all those who came to visit him and wish him well. And in the evening he did serve, for this is how Sir Sarnac Bahadur, his knight, had spent his own vigil day.

There was a feast, my lord, but as I could not raise the funds to partake (what with my ribs, my lord, I can not walk my rounds, and so cannot be paid) I instead wandered from table to table where the good members of House Galbraith and House De Taahe did take pity on my condition and give me food and drink.

And when feast was done, my lord, Their Royal Lupine Majesties, did hold Their court, where many good gentles were recognized for their skills and service. Finally, Kasimir, son of Sarnac, son of Roak, was brought before Their Majesties, preceded by his squire-brothers, who bore his shield and helm. There, many noble people did speak of his many virtues, and he was laden with gifts. For he was cloaked, and spurred, and given a sword. Also was he given a spear, for he was, my lord, a Vendel. And, of course, he was given custody of the chain of the Ealdormere’s Order of Chivalry. His Majesty Malik then invited His Majesty Sir Brannos and Sir Sarnac to place their hands with His upon the Sword of State, and together they did dub Kasimir, and make him a Knight of the Realm.

I went for the knighting, my lord, for it is not every day that we see a man such as this gain his golden spurs.

Crown Tournament XIII, May 15, 2003

By THLaird Colyne Stewart

Ah young one, it is good to see you again. Come, have a seat by the fire. We were just talking about tournaments, about those grand displays of feats of arms, where lords and ladies fight inspired by their consorts love. There are many tournaments held throughout our lands, but the most important of them all is the Crown Tournament, for it is there that gentles from across the kingdom gather to display their courtesy, grace, and skill at arms as our Majesties' Heirs are chosen by the outcome.

There was, as you all must know, a Crown Tournament held this past week. It was in the Shire of Trinovantia Nova that our new Prince and Princess were to be decided. I will name the combatants, and most, if not all, of their names should be familiar to you, for they are all pillars of our kingdom in their fashion:

Lord Grimmroth Skullhammer for Viscountess Moria the Black

Baron Menken Brechen for Baroness Eleanor Cadfan

Baron Phaidrig McNeil for Mistress Etaoin O'fearghail

Baron Sergeant Malik 'abd al-Rahman for Maitresse Baronne Genevieve
Chastellain d'Anjou

THLady Arwyn of Leicester for Master Cerdic O'Cuilleamhain

Sir Evander MacLachlan for THLady Melusine De La Rose

Master Trumbrand the Wanderer for THLady Kaylah the Cheerful

THLady Kaylah the Cheerful for Master Trumbrand the Wanderer

Sir Nigel MacFarlane for Baroness Adrielle Kerrec

THLord Etian au Naval for Lady Valfreya Greenspeare

Tiarna Eoin au Beirne for al-Shariifa Zahra bint al-Nahr al-Ishbiiliya
al-Naariya

THLord Corrig McKail for Lady Emer nic Aidan

Lord Mung Lo for Prydyddes Gwerydd verch Rhys

Lord Tiberius Justus for THLady Anne Tinker

THLord Wilheem Caimbeul for Lady Skallagrim Worgenson

Streonwold Wulfesbana, Hlaford for Lady Seonag Nic Thomais

Lady Seonag Nic Thomais for Streonwold Wulfesbana, Hlaford

Leif of House Hrogn for Lady Morrigan of Temair

Lord Ymir, the thinnest Viking for Lady Rosalind Fitzwilson

The crowd was unfortunately small, perhaps because of the weather, perhaps of the Baron Wars to the south, perhaps because of the close-by Crowning of the new King of the Middle. I know not. Contrary to popular belief, bards do not know everything. Generally we just pretend that we do.

Regardless of the size of the crowd, it was attentive, and the fighters found themselves the centre of rapt attention. The tournament was done as a double elimination tournament, with a number of bye fights which were fought with Baron Konrad Mathias Jaeger von Dubrau, His Excellency Ramshaven. The fighters paired off, the winners staying on the A-list, whilst those defeated moved to the B-list. This continued until only three fighters remained undefeated. These were Baron Malik, Sir Evander and Sir Nigel.

These three then fought a round robin, which was taken by Baron Malik, forcing Evander and Nigel to the B-list. Those fighters on the B-list were then paired again. Any fighter on the B-line who lost left the tournament, until only one remained. And it was thus that Master Trumbrand met Baron Malik in the finals.

The final was to be three best of three rounds. The first round was fought sword and shield, the second with polearm, the weapon of the third is unknown to me, as the third round was not needed. For you see my friends, both combatants fought bravely and well, with skill and chivalry, but the first, and the second round, were both taken by the same man--Baron Malik.

Malik, who had been in the Crown finals twice before, one of those times being Ealdormere's first Crown tourney. Malik, serjant of the Red Company. Malik, baron of the court. Malik, first baron of Rising Waters. [check these facts]

And so Malik was brought before their Majesties Berus II and Marion II and a new princely crown was placed upon his head. And he in turn placed a crown upon the brow of his lady love, Genevieve. Genevieve, Mistress of the Pelican. Genevieve, baroness of the court. Genevieve, first Baroness of Rising Waters.

And so was the Royal line preserved and strengthened. And so does it continue.

Ealdormere’s Newest Mu'allim (Winter War, March 6, 2004)

By THLaird Colyne Stewart

Greetings unto his grand exaltedness, the Sultan, from his most humble servant Khuzaymah al-‘Abbas,

As per his mightiness' decree, did I, a most humble scribe to his court, travel from our beautiful lands to the far-off realm called Ealdormere, to witness the elevation in station of one of our countrymen. I will herein endeavor, with the aid of Allah, to describe with detail the events of my passage to that far off land, and my time spent amongst its natives.

By camel I traveled to a trading port where I purchased accommodation upon a small ship. For may days the ship traversed the waters of the world, finally depositing me on an outcropping of rock, which the ship’s captain assured me was part of the Kingdom of Ealdormere.

There, I was met by a local who called himself Steinbjorn. This burly man loaded my belongings upon a thick chested horse, and then led me off into the thick green forests. Truly this land is blessed with much rain, for it to support so much vegetation.

Finally my guide and I arrived at a great hall of stone. It was simple in its construction but was hung with many glorious banners. Beside the hall was spread a market place where local inhabitants bought and sold fresh produce.

The tales I had been told of this land often featured the words 'cold' and 'snow'. Snow, so my sources told me, was white flakes which fell from the sky and coated the earth in their blanket. When I arrived there was no evidence of this snow, though it was cold and damp, with a sometimes harsh wind blowing. It was a strange thing not to feel the comfortable and familiar baking heat of the sun on my head.

As we entered the hall we passed many local inhabitants wearing many forms of foreign dress. Some wore tight coats covered in pearls, some wore large flowing black skirts with black hoods, and others wore wrappings on their legs. I was, apparently, not the only visiting dignitary from our corner of the earth, for I saw many dressed in the fashions of the desert peoples.

After passing through the gate where we had to pay a tax to the local magistrates, we walked into a large room. As the weather without was foul, the day's events were all to happen indoors. The hall was a great rectangle, and though we had arrived early in the morning, already the room was crowded. To the left several tents were set up beside which sat several musicians. Beside these tents merchants displayed their wares; several tables, most already full of people, were spread about the tents and merchants. In the centre of the hall was a dais, upon which rested the thrones of Their Majesties of Ealdormere, Cennedi and Susanna. Behind this dais was another tent, presumably one for the royals to retreat to should they need to rest or confer in private.

To the left of the dais a small section of the room had been roped off. Within this area men and women dueled with thin blades of a style I have never seen before. The entire right half of the hall was likewise roped, and within it many, many men and women fought with a variety of weapons. The peoples of this land are vigorous indeed, and many did not lay down their arms until it was time to feast.

Throughout the day I heard music, some of it familiar to my ears, and saw dancing. Some of the dancing was strange to me, but much of it I recognized from our mighty culture. I also witnessed many people playing at games. Again, some of them were known to me, but some seemed puzzlingly obtuse to me.

Not soon after our arrival, Their Majesties of Ealdormere were brought before the crowd and they called for the attention of all. A few awards and titles were bestowed, including induction into an Order of the Crucible, to one known by many as 'Uncle J'. His Majesty was heard to remark that this J was now the 'Honourable Uncle'.

As well, Rakkas al-Bassim, Ra'ee al-Saleh Sheikh al-Zubeyd al-Sharef Valizan ibn Fredeh was brought before Their thrones. He was asked if he had thought long and hard on whether or not he wished to be elevated to the Order of the Pelican, and this good man said that he had indeed thought long and hard, and that we was willing to accept the honour and burden this represented. The Order, and a local warrior, one of those called knights in that land, escorted him to the clutch of tents set to the one side of the hall. There he sat in contemplation--a vigil, as I heard it called--where he was visited by many. Beside the tents the musicians played long and loud.

I spent most of the day either watching the tournaments upon the fields of battle, learning local games, or speaking to local dignitaries upon your behalf, oh great one. I believe you will shortly be hearing from representatives of one of the local baronies who are interested in importing spices and dates from our fertile lands.

The time sped by faster than I thought possible, and soon it was time to dine. The meal was exquisite Persian fare, and I heard many complementing it as one of the finest meals they had ever had. Throughout the meal there was dancing and music. It was a most entertaining and satisfying time.

When the tables had been cleared, Their Majesties again held court. They handed out more honours and awards, a few of which impressed themselves upon my memory.

One man, a bearded northerner, was told to come into Their Majesties' presence, and bring with him his thrall. They were told that his thrall had been acting above her station, and that this would not do. The king then fined the man one mark of silver for this indiscretion. Then, so that the thrall would no longer act above her station, they raised her station and bestowed upon her the title of Lady, thus freeing her. Having now deprived the northern man of his thrall, the king recompensed him by paying him one mark of silver. I cannot understand the northern tongue well, but I am told that the once thrall has been given a new byname, as her old one exclaimed her bondage. Her new byname is, as I understand it, 'little Mrs. fancy pants'.

As well, that Order of the Crucible I have already mentioned, was called before Their Majesties as a Saxon, known as Sir Ed the Red, and a local baroness, Alyce de Sheppey, were added to their number.

Finally, the Order of the Pelican was called forth, and Valizan was led through the crowd of onlookers, preceded by a woman who spoke for him, and followed by his banner, which bore a proud peacock. As he slowly approached the thrones, he was ceremoniously stripped of his outer garments and jewelry and was adorned with oil. All this was done by representatives of the Kingdoms of AEthelmarc, Atlantia, the East and the Middle.

Finally he stood before his king and queen. The king told Valizan to bear his breast, as a pelican bears its breast for its young. Valizan opened his shirt, but this was not enough for His Majesty, who strode forward and ripped the garment from Valizan's body.

Placating himself at Their Majesties feet, Valizan then heard the words of many who would speak on his behalf that day, praising his deeds and great worth. The king's sword of state--Gwaylor, I have learned it is called--was brought forth, but before the king would allow Valizan to swear fealty and accept induction into the Order, he was to be outfitted with symbols of his rank. He was dressed in new clothing, and given medallions and cloaks. Now elevated, the newest Pelican turned to be greeted by an audience on their feet.

When the court was over, a local song singer wearing what to my Eastern eyes was a blasphemous explosion of colour, was handing off pieces of Valizan's torn shirt. I am pleased to report, your Mightiness, that I have acquired a portion of that garment for you.

I was then invited to a local hostelry where a celebration was to be held in Valizan's honour, but as I was tired I retired with my guide to our inn to sleep. Come the dawn I began to retrace my steps and began the long journey back to my beautiful home.

All this I saw, and I swear it is true.

A Rising Sun and a Blooming Flower (The Coronation of Edouard Beausoliel and Genevieve de la Rosse, May 3, 2003)

By THLaird Colyne Stewart

The third day of May saw the accension of Edouard Beausoliel and Genevieve de Rosse to the lupine thrones of Ealdormere. The crowning ceremony took place in the Shire of Trinovantia Nova, and many gentles from across Septentria were present. The cantons of Ardchreag, Eoforwic and Vest Yorvik dominated one section of the hall in a vast array of chairs, rugs, carpets and consumables.

Septentrians were prominent at the event on the field, in court and around the hall. Master Hector of the Black Height announced processions for court and a bardic circle grew up around Mistress Marian of Heatherdale’s merchant table. Lord Thorolfr smithr of Eoforwic was on the field with Baroness Domhnail, both resplendant in scarlet tabards. Sir Evander MacLachlan was also on the field, the Septentrian favour hung about his neck swinging to and fro as his sword and shield flashed in the sun.

Though just recovering from a very bad cold, Baron Siegfried Brandbeorn still took part in an armoured combat tourney, where in the final two out of three bout he faced Count Sir Aaron Preslee Worgansson. Both fought well, and in the end Siegfried was victorious.

During morning court, Lady Isotta Gianglifiazzi was called to kneel before the king and queen, who bestowed upon her an Award of the Scarlet Banner. Baroness Adrielle Kerrec was called by the Order of the Pelican, and Their Majesties honoured their request that she be put on vigil for elevation to that honoured order.

I continued my recruitment of fighters to represent the Games Guild in the tournies to take place at the Guilds Day Festival in November. By the end of the day I had my team of three, consisting of THL Richard Larmer, Count Sir Aaron Preslee Worgansson and Sir Evander MacLachlan.

It has beenr eported to me that during the evening court, Rosalia dei Querini was awarded an Award of Arms for her efforts in organizing the Casa Loma demos held during February.
