A HISTORY OF THE CANTONS OF CAER DRAETH, SWANS KEEP, AND BEREMERE

The Canton of Caer Draeth was inaugurated in approximately 1978 and was based at the Curling Club in Cookstown.  Events were held at least once a year, most notably a Spring event, to shake off the heavy dormancy of winter.  In 2008, the year that Ealdormere celebrated ten years as a kingdom, Caer Draeth celebrated its 30th anniversary with a Spring Tune Up event which included a feast of 30 dishes prepared for 90 feasters.

A group of members of Caer Draeth, who actually resided in the Penetanguishene-Midland area, decided to form their own group closer to home, so the Incipient Canton of Swans Keep was born at a Christmas pot luck in December 2002 with the first actual meeting being held in the Midland Library with long time SCAdian, Miriel (Yvonne Mitchell) as Seneschal. Meetings were subsequently moved to the Real Canadian Superstore (originally Zehrs) free kitchen teaching space and THL Augustyn (Nick West) became Seneschal. Work was done to get approval for the name of Swans Deep, which reflected the Trumpeter Swans that were indigenous to the area and were in the process of being reintroduced at Wye Marsh, as well as the deep harbours in the area. That didn't pass, so Swans Keep was subsequently submitted, and was approved in 2004.

Swans Keep grew and flourished, having regular A and S classes and annual demonstrations. We held our first event, a weekend camping event in June of 2009, sponsored by the Canton of Petrea Thule. Saturday's fighting activities were completely rained out but the archery activities took place and much fun was had, including celebrating the 40th birthday of its then Seneschal, THLord Augustyn, and a bardic circle after the rain ended late in the afternoon. Subsequently, events entitled St. Valentine's Day Massacre were held very successfully in February for four years, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013, until the vast warehouse space was no longer available to us.

In approximately, 2010, Swans Keep lost its free meeting space at the Real Canadian Superstore in Midland and began meeting in Barrie at a free warehouse location, being the workplace of one of its members.  Caer Draeth also lost its free space in Cookstown and was invited to share the free space in Barrie for their own meetings on alternate weeks to ours, as well as being invited to join in our fighting, archery, and thrown weapons practices. Subsequently, the two groups decided to combine forces as long as a new name and identity was chosen, with Caer Draeth being the name being used until replaced.

In 2013, the new combined group (awaiting its new name) also lost its free space in Barrie and began meeting regularly at the home of its then Seneschal, Lord Connal, until such time as an appropriate public meeting space could be secured.

After four years of discussion, suggestions, submissionsand and returns, the new name of Beremere was submitted in 2014 and was subsequently approved by the College of Heralds. Time and effort have also been expended submitting and discussing new heraldry for our new name.

As of January 2015, we began meeting weekly at Grove Street Public School for fight practices and A&S classes alternating biweekly. (Some exceptions apply, please see calendar).

Our bid to hold Crown Tournament in October of 2015 was accepted and the event was held successfully in the small town of Ivy south west of Barrie.

Finally, in February 2016, with our new name and device approved, the name of The Canton of Beremere was revealed at the court of Winter War in London.

The Baroness’s Bump on the Head

By THL Ulvar van der Nederlanden

Sometimes when you hear a story you wonder the truth of it. Many a person will retell a tale with their own variation on the facts. I am here to set the record straight. I have a story and can state that this is the truth as I was the Baronial Herald and it was my job to record important information. To insure that those who needed to know would have the information, I would be the one to investigate and to insure I had all the information those that needed to know knew.

Long ago there was a Flaming Jewel within the Lands of Septentria. So great was her passion and skill that she was a fighting Baroness in these lands. She commanded the troops of Septentria with a devious smile that those who beheld her vision knew she was up to something. But whatever that something might be would be enjoyed and most entertaining. Especially to her.

While down south in the debatable lands there was Pennsic War. The Baroness had gathered her troops and marched down to join in to the fray. She brought with her, easily half of Ealdormere’s army that year with nearly three dozen fighters and two dozen archers.

The Septentrian fighters would protect their Baroness with such zeal that she took pleasure to command them from the field.

But on one dreadful day a polearm was lucky enough to fell this mighty Baroness.

We Suck!: Thuligan Archery

By THL Ulvar van der Nederlanden

Once upon a time long ago there was a group of archers that were just starting out. They were all from the same canton. The Canton of Petrea Thule. These Thuligans (as that is what they called themselves) had various levels of archery experience but decided collectively to try and work and practice to get better at it.

But early in their efforts they came up with a Motto that has lasted to this day. The Motto was “We Suck!” You see they were not very good at the time.

Now at this time you have to understand that Ealdormere was still a Principality within the Middle Kingdom. And so we had a Prince and Princess who governed the lands for their Majesties.

These archers continue to practice and learn and improve. And they continued doing this regularly. They found locations to practice and have regular practices to continue to improve.

Their names grew to become noted archers within Ealdormere. Szepesy, Danarian, Dafydd, Malachai, Ulvar and Gottfried eventually became really good at Archery. Most of them have represented Ealdormere at the Archer Champions battles at Pennsic. Collectively, I believe, they have been on the champion’s team over 30 times.

But there was one event where their Motto was brought into question. In Southern Ealdormere in the Lands of the Barony of Rising Waters an event was held. And an Archery tournament was run that day. Between these fine archers they won every part of the tournament. They had done very well that day.

During court each of the winners were invited into court to receive their prize from Prince Cordigan and Princess Diane. His Highness was very well acquainted with this group as he was friends with the Thuligans. After receiving their prizes His Highness informed his herald that he had something to say to the Populous. He asked the members of the Petra Thule archery corps to stand up where they sat. We did. He then asked us to say our motto loudly so the populous could hear it. After a few shoulder shrugs and heads nodding. We spoke loudly and said our motto. “We Suck!”

At this point Prince Cordigan spoke to the populous and said “These are your archer champions of the day!”

Then he spoke more directly to the Petrea Thule Archery Corps. “I think you need to change your motto!”

Since that day the motto has changed. It is now “We Suck! Just not as much!”

As always the best stories are completely true. If you are ever on an archery line and hear someone say “We Suck!” You may have just heard from a Thuligan. Once a Thuligan, Always a Thuligan.

The Making of a Master

[Originally posted to the Ealdormere Gazette site.]

By Ealdormere Gazette Columnist Magistra Nicolaa de Bracton.

It isn't every day that one witnesses the creation of a new Peerage Order.  In fact, it's safe to say that with the possible exception of Duke Finnvarr, there was no one in attendance at Practicum who had ever seen such a thing.

THL Giovanni d'Enzinas was put on vigil for the Order of Defence at Queen's Prize Tourney.  For those who were not in attendance, the initial boon was begged between Their Majesties, as there was not yet a Master of Defence within Ealdormere.  At Practicum, however, Master Giovanni of Trimaris -- or "Master Giovanni the Elder", as he was introduced--did this function at the vigil ceremony at Practicum, held in a short morning court.  Rather than just the Order of Defence, Their Majesties then asked all the Peers there present to bear witness and to lend their support to the boon. Laurels, Knights, Pelicans, and Royal Peers all stepped forward to do so.

The vigil ceremony then commenced.  Seven speakers, representing the seven virtues, each came forward with an item to wear or contemplate during the vigil.  These items were:

  • ·         An arming coat, represent defense against harm, just as the candidate would defend others against harm
  • ·         A gorget, to shine just as the candidate's heart would shine as a beacon of inspiration
  • ·         A white scarf, representing honour without fear
  • ·         A pair of gloves
  • ·         A helm, as a symbol of nobility
  • ·         A sword - Giovanni's own--representing skill
