I’d Like my Khan Boiled, Please (Ealdormere War Practice, 2002)

Mahault van der Eych

"Feelin' hot, hot, hot!" I think that's the best way to start this report. We arrived on site Thursday afternoon, hoping to get the tent set up before the rain came. We were in a bit of a panic because it was raining in the west end and Kyle told us his neighbor's lawn had just been struck by lightning. We wanted to get our tent up before everyone else came so we would have a dry base for everyone to use for their set up. If all failed, we'd live in it for a while!

Thankfully, my usual trust of the weather forecast was betrayed because the rain never did come. What did, however, was some of the hottest weather we've seen for a long time in Ealdormere! Even Iolanda was complaining about the heat! Humidex readings of 42 or more wiped out even the best of us. My faith in weathermen betrayed, I rushed to the store to buy a hat. Unfortunately, I missed out on the latest trend, sported by the ever fashionable Wolfgang... pastel sun bonnets. Her Majesty was so pleased with his attire, she commanded him to return to Her with it, bearing flowers next time!

My faith, however, held fast in my friends and Canton-mates. Despite the heat, the lack of water, the crowds, everyone I saw had a huge grin pasted on his or her face. Laughter and silliness abounded in the Autocrat's camp! Thursday night we hosted the Blair Witch (or did she host us?). Friday night saw the creation of a thirst-quenching treat "Melibu's". Singing, laughing and sharing the fire helped renew bonds forged over the years. Saturday night, we reveled with the Galbraiths, flinging Vikings, quaffing mead and toasting marshmallows while being fed all sorts of yummy treats. We were even privileged to be included in the "vigiling" of Garraed Galbraith. Sunday was the Bardic Circle, where many Chreaggers were heard wailing and giggling throughout the camp. Sadly, we did not find any badgers.

What we did find was that we are without a doubt the coolest Canton going! From Bear's Claws to Bear's Hearts to AOA's, we were recognized for service and chivalry. The hard work and efforts of our friends shone through to light the path for the rest of us. I can't begin to list all the doings in court so I'll leave that to another report but I must say, the scribes and heralds were busy... I think we wore Streonwald out! Most moving was the ceremony for Mistress Rylyn, welcoming her into the Order of the Pelican. One of the things I treasure most about the SCA is the love we share for each other and the fact that we can stand up and show it. The speeches made about Mistress Rylyn brought many to tears. Speaking of tears, I think I saw a few glinting in a certain newly made Lady's eyes as she wandered back to the sewing class we interrupted...

Although the nights were busy (and silly), the days were jam packed with activities. From a re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings through the eyes of an archer to drilling for War, our field was full. Thorfinna and I even stumbled across something near and dear to us: axes! Being thrown! Yahoo! Spears, pole arms and swords bashed many a helm, with many sweaty, dizzy fighters kept well watered by the never-ceasing efforts of Melchior the Carver. Even the fencers, snappily attired as usual, crossed swords in the sun. Several gentles were admitted to the Academy, to the cheers of all.

Speaking of fighting, guess who authorized this weekend? That's right, all of us! Wat, Wolfgang, Berend and I gave it our best and have added our names to those who stand to defend the Kingdom, albeit on weekends... Wolfgang swore his fealty to His Majesty while Berend and I will stand shoulder to elbow in the shieldwall with our brothers and sisters of the Isengasitha (the Popsicle was orange, for anyone interested). I'm so proud of everyone; we did great! I'd like to think we were a credit to our long suffering teacher, Brandt. Without his hard work and effort, none of us would be in armour, let alone authorized and ready for War. I hope he sees in us some fulfillment of his dream to help, teach and share with others his love of the game.

Let it not be said that I have ignored my other passion, the Arts and Sciences! Well, I guess I might have, had Iolanda not driven me bananas all weekend... "You have 27 hours until you have to teach your class," "You now have 15 hours until your class". I'm sure you get the picture. I think I might have even been woken up in the wee hours by her muttering "Must get whiteboard. Must get whiteboard." Iolanda did a terrific job with the classes, with everything from soaps to juggling to Chinese herbs to Heraldry taught by many good gentles. Attendance varied for each class but the comments I heard were the same; "Wow, classes!" They even started on time!

As a parent, I find camping events quite challenging. Juggling cooking, cleaning up, entertaining the kids, and trying to get anything done is quite difficult. It's also very stressful for both kids and parents. Ivanna the Oblivious, who lived up to her name this year, was not oblivious to this. She was an absolute lifesaver this year, giving her all to organize fun, entertaining activities for the kids. From crafts to games to water balloons, she kept the munchkins happy all day! This meant a lot to me; allowing me to have some peace of mind and relax, knowing that the girls were in good hands. Wassail and thank you for doing such a necessary job!

If I missed mentioning someone or something, I apologize profusely. I was so overwhelmed with the amount of wonderful things that happened this past weekend that I'm still trying to sort them out. It's all pretty much a blur, thanks to Thorfinna, some Vanilla Coke and blue skies...

EWP VI: From the Files of the Skirmisher (July 1 – 4, 2004)

By THLaird Colyne Stewart

Galbraiths Turn Twelve

After clearing the grass of errant clumps of knightly hair, the Galbraiths again opened their encampment for their traditional EWP party. This year's tokens were resin cast discs emblazoned with a griffon. As the flames leapt and the mead flowed, many took a turn at the infamous Galbraith toss. This year entitled 'Pitch the Persian', the object of the toss looked remarkably like a certain newly recognized Pelican within our kingdom. The winner of the men's toss was Osgard, a visitor from foreign lands (with a throw over 29 feet), whilst Baroness Adrielle Kerrec won the women's toss (with a throw over 15 feet).

Around the fire, Master Hector of the Black Height called for his family (and others interested) to witness as he took a new protégée: Lord Gunnar Halfdan of Lund, he of the bag full of chocolate.

*****************************

Inclement Weather Cancels Some Activities

Many had been looking forward to the EWP Flea Market and Pillage on Sunday. However smatterings of rain, thunder, and the promise of an approaching thunderstorm sent many on their way home early that morning. Hopefully the market and pillage will occur at EWP next year.

As well, the Baronial Champions Rapier tourney was cancelled.

Due to rain before the event, the hay on the parking, thrown weapons and archery fields had been cut but not turned or collected. This caused thrown weapons to be moved down to the backyard of the property owner's home, necessitated people parking along the side of the road, and caused delays in the archery. Ardchreag wishes to thank everyone for their understanding and good humour in dealing with these abnormalities this year.

****************************

Let Loose the Dogs of War Practice!

On Saturday morning, Lady Alana Greywood, Baronial Hound Mistress of Ben Dunfirth, set up a hound coursing track on the list field. Many good gentles gathered to watch as various Ealdormerean dogs ran the course. Their Majesties, sitting under the Royal shade, whilst speaking with the Orders of the Pelican and Laurel, were situated so as to be able to watch the fun.

***************************

The Arts of Peace and War

This year saw many classes being taught at EWP. For those with a martial leaning, beginners classes in thrown weapons, fighting, fencing and archery were offered. As well, many, many classes were offered throughout the weekend in the A&S tent. Perhaps the most popular was the Onion Skin Dying class held by Her Excellency, Gaerwen of Trafford, on Thursday. Even the rain could not drive away the large crowd gathered to watch and participate as cloth was dyed in various colours and hung upon ropes to 'dry' (it was raining, after all).

Classes were also held in bow making, Celtic clothing, tablet weaving, sprang and on many other subjects. The organizers of the event wish to thank all of those who took time out of their busy schedules to teach.

What Happened to the Skirmisher?

This was a common refrain throughout the event. Originally, an issue of the Skirmisher was supposed to be available at the gate, with a new issue Saturday and Sunday morning. The Saturday and Sunday editions never materialized, for the following reasons. On Thursday and Friday, nothing really happened except for the A&S classes. This in itself was not enough to warrant printing a second issue. The Sunday edition was not printed due to a lack of time to get the issue together. (Last year, the Skirmisher was put together by the person running gate, during lulls in arrivals.) Hopefully the Skirmisher will continue next year, but if it does, it will likely need a dedicated event position, held by someone with no other duties for the event. Only time will tell.

*********************************

All the Amenities of Home

It's early in the morning. You've just woken up and you're tired and dirty. Stepping out of your tent you see the horned mug flag proudly flapping in the breeze. Grabbing your tankard you run over to the Teach Cairdeas coffee house for some fresh ground brew, and maybe a muffin. Hunger and thirst satisfied, its only a short walk over to the Saxon Showers for a shower, as hot or as cold as you like it.

Luxery.

Continuing its mission of the summer, House Teach Cairdeas rose early every morning to brew several pots of hot fresh coffee for camping SCAnadians. The charge? A donation to help cover costs was appreciated, but not necessary.

Likewise, the Mad Saxon, THLord Garwig, only asked a donation to use the Saxon Showers. All donations went to cover costs, with any excess being donated to the Chirurgeonate.

*******************************

HRH a Straight Shooter

Of the many authorizations at EWP, the most notable was that of Her Lupine Highness, Genevieve. Armed with a crossbow, she took to the field and suitably impressed the marshals with her skill. This will allow her to take the field at Pennsic this summer, and rain arrows down upon the heads of our foes.

Wassail to Her Highness!

****************************

Prince to be Knighted

During a lull in the fighting on Saturday, Their Majesties and Their Highnesses processed onto the field. They had come to award an axe to Lord Benedict for his skill upon the field. When they turned to leave, Sir Sarnac Ba'adur and Sir Hasdrubal begged them to wait. Addressing His Majesty, they said that the Order of Chivalry was lacking and that this error had to be rectified. The king called the Order to him, and a boon was begged.

The boon was to place Prince Malik, upon vigil for elevation into the Order of Chivalry.

This announcement was met with much cheering, and the clashing of sword upon shield. The elevation, it was announced, would occur at Pennsic War.

His Highness then held the field for an hour, before being led away to bath and begin his vigil.

Wassail to His Highness!

*********************************

Fight by Torchlight

On Friday night, His Majesty, Berus II, hosted a torchlight tournament. Over twenty fighters armoured up to compete. It was a standard double elimination tournament, with the King's line and the Baron's line. Those who won their first battle moved to the King's line, whilst the vanquished moved to the Baron's line. Anyone loosing a battle whilst on the Baron's line was knocked out of the tournament. In the end, Sir Edward the Red was the last standing in the King's line, and Sir Evander MacLachlan was the last in the Baron's line. In a pitched final, Sir Ed emerged victorious. Sir Ed was presented with a spear by His Majesty.

There then followed several five-man melees between the 'red' team and the 'not-red' team. (Teams determined by colours on tabards.)

***********************************

It's a Three-peat at Mead Competition!

The Third Annual Lord Ulrich von der See Memorial Ealdormerean Brewing Competition was held across from the Ardchreag encampment after court on July 3. This year the number of categories had been extended to three, being: mead, cordials and spirits and beer. Over thirty bottles were entered in the competition. Competitors and spectators sat in the shade and sipped from each bottle, while plates of cheese and crackers were circulated to cleanse the palate. Once all the bottles had been sampled, winners were chosen based on flavour, appearance, scent and other factors.

This year's winners were:

For cordials and spirits: Lady Mahault van der Eych.

For beer: THLord Justinian Clarus.

For mead: three time champion, Lord Berend van der Eych.

A special award was presented to Lady Marion Golightly for "best overall effect". Prizes were donated by the Canton of Ardchreag.

This competition is held every year at Ealdormere War Practice to honour the memory of Lord Ulrich von der See, a member of the Cantons of Ardchreag and Greenhithe. Ulrich passed away due to medicinal complications a few weeks before EWP in 2001. He was well known for (amongst other things) his passion for brewing.

***************************************

Swordbreaker Breaks Sword

Many good gentles authorized in various forms upon the list field during EWP this year. One however, stands out as unique. Stephen Scrymgeour, from the Canton of Ardchreag, and brother to Laird Colyne Stewart, took to the lists for his first authorization. He was armed with a sword made from rattan that had been gifted to him by a certain Excellency. Unbeknownst to all, that rattan was slightly older than it appeared. When the call came to lay on, Stephen swung his sword with such verve that it snapped clean in half upon his opponent's shield.

"When the call to hold came I thought I had failed after one blow," said a chagrined Stephen.

Luckily, Herr Wulfgang Donnerfaust was standing close by and gave Stephen a sturdier sword for the rest of his authorization. From there things went smoothly, and when it was announced that he had passed, he was hailed as 'Stephen Swordbreaker'.

Knight Shearin' Raises Over $2000 for Kingdom

As the sun began to set after court on Saturday night, many good gentles gathered in the Galbraith encampment to witness the shaving of two members of Ealdormere's Order of Chivalry.

Back at the Coronation of Berus II and Marian II, Sir Evander MacLachlan had challenged Sir Siegfried Brandbeorn to a contest. If Evander could raise $500 for to be split between Kingdom Scribal and Ealdormere Commissariat, then Siegfried would have his long locks shorn. Siegfried agreed, but with two conditions. First, the amount must be raised to $1000. Second, if he could raise $1000 himself, to be split between Kingdom Chirurgeonate and Regalia, then Evander would be shaved from the waist up (sparing only his eyebrows). Evander agreed.

In court at EWP, Evander proudly proclaimed that he had raised his $1000, but Siegfried, holding a small, rattling tin, sadly informed everyone present that he had been lax in his collecting and did not have the necessary funds. Sir Mordain Blackcloak then came forward with his credit card, and Master Hector of the Black Height put money in the tin. However, Siegfried was still short of his $100 goal. Not wanting to see one of his knights fail in a quest, His Majesty donated the remainder of the needed funds.

An hour later, Siegfried was sitting on a chair in the Galbraith encampment, his hair braided and ready to be cut. Tickets were being sold to see who would get to shave each knight. (This raised over $50 for the Royal Travel Fund.) The first lucky contestants cut off Siegfried's four braids (which were placed in a sealed bag to be donated to the Cancer Society to make wigs for children with cancer). His hair was then shorn down to stubble with a razor.

A much balder Siegfried then gave up his seat of honour to Evander who's hair was cut off completely. His back and chest were likewise shaved, even his armpits were not safe. (Nor were his squires, Lord Tiberius of Warwick and Laird Colyne Stewart, who were 'volunteered' into shaving them.)

Both knights then posed for photographs and let people rub their scalps.

Truly this kingdom is blessed to have such self sacrificing people such as these two knights.

Court Proceedings, Saturday 28, AS 38

Septentrian Court:       Some offices changed hands. Ardchreag has a new Seneschal, Laird Colyne; and Septentria has a new Minister of Arts and Sciences, Lord Magnus.; and the Barony also has a new Archery Marshall, Lord Geoffrey.

Booty was awarded to the winners of the thrown weapons competition for Baronial Champion. Congratulations to Christiaan van Pietr who placed first and to Gunnarr who was named Baronial Thrown Weapons Champion by Their Excellencies.

William the Younger presented Toby (Son of Thomas) with a golden chalice as winner of the children’s quest.

Cynred and Gaerwen lamented the tired and old regalia of Septentria they’d left to their cousins upon their investiture, and presented Melchior the Carver, who brought forth the new thrones he had crafted for Their Excellencies. (Needless to say, they swapped chairs immediately).

Four new members swore to the Iron Companions.

Kingdom Court:          Their Majesties presented four new nobles to Ealdormere: Lady Ayla,  Lord Serion,  Lord Hans Thorvaldson and Lady Alaani.

Both Graem and Gaerwen were given the Award of the Orion for their great skills in the Arts and Sciences.

Three new warriors were added to complete the ranks of the Custos Regus—Kol for Ramshaven, Iohannes for Skraeling Althing and Eoin of Rising Waters—and each was given a sash and a ‘good Norman spear’ as a symbol of their station, along with Mistress Etoian who was named Kingdom Archery Champion.

Geoffrey Guiscart was made a member of the Order of Thorbjorn’s Hammer.

Her Majesty gave her Queen’s Favour to Lord Berend, Lord Konrad and Lord Trumbrand (who arrived in Court in a manner that delighted many of the Lady’s in the gallery!)

Aeron and Eleanor were welcomed from Ansteora.

Second Annual Mead Competition

Once again the Canton of Ardchreag hosted a mead competition, the Second Annual Lord Ulrich von der See Memorial Ealdormerean Mean Championship. The blind taste testing took place in the Ardchreag encampment on Saturday after court. A crowd of mead and cider enthusiasts clustered about a table presided over by Lady Mahault van der Eych. Bottles were poured, cups were raised and the competition was on.

The mead and cider was judged by all present, those worthy gentles including (but not being limited to): Uncle Justinian, Lady Seonag nic Thomais, Lady Iolanda de Albornoz, William the Younder, Lady Naja Kesali Orekov, Lord Hereward the Far-Dweller, and Lord Berend van der Eych.

None of the tasters were told whose entrants work they were enjoying during the judging.

When all the mead and cider had been poured Lord Berend van der Ecyh was named winner for mead (for the second year) and Lord Garth III was named the winner for the cider category.

Dependents Taken

Lord Tiberius Justus Brittanicus was squired during EWP to Sir Evander MacLachlan in the Petrea Thule encampment. Tiberius' familiar yellow boots now have silver spurs, and a silver chain graces his neck. Master Allen, who was Evander’s Master-of-Arms, was on hand to witness and take part in the squiring.

At the same time, THL Anne Tinker was taken as an apprentice by Dame Helen of Greyfells. As at her own apprenticing, Helen wrote a contract with Anne, which she then tore in two. One half is in her keeping, the other in Anne's.

Repeat Champions at the Galbraith Toss: Malik and Thorfinna once again win their categories

As in year's past, House Galbraith played host to a party on the Saturday evening of War Practice. The mead flowed like rain, and food was spread out upon the groaning tables. There was singing, talking, shouting and nipple twisting galore. (The nipple twisting was started by a certain Count, and a poor fellow from Sarum ended up being the brunt of much of it. By all accounts, by the end of the party half of Ealdormere had given him a purple nurple. He would cover his chest with his hands, but the second his guard faltered a hand would shoot out of the crowd and the victim was again nurpled.)

There was again a tossing game, where a forty-pound dummy was flung by members of the population as far as they can fling it. In past years the dummy has been dressed as a Viking, or a crusader, though this year's bore a remarkable likeness to His Excellency, Baron Corwyn of Septentria. Shiekh Malik abd al-Raman won the men's category for a second straight year with a throw off over 24 feet. Likewise, Lady Thorfinna gra'feldr won her second straight year in the women's category with a throw of over 10 feet. Kyle, son of Glynnis, won the under-18 category with a throw of around 14 feet. (Please note that all numbers are close to accurate but due to mead ingestion my memory may be a tad fuzzy. The heffalumps and woozles running across the field were also distracting.) Each victor was awarded a prize. Thorfinna won a carved horn, Malik won a belt and Kyle won something I did not see.

The Galbraiths, in a change from tradition, did not hold a scavenger hunt this year. Instead they held a treasure hunt, hiding keys about the site. Only by unraveling riddles could the true keys be found. I never did see what the treasure boxes unlocked by these keys contained, but considering they were donated by the Galbraiths I'm sure they were swanky.

Games Guild Tourney Winners

Lord Michel Wolffauer of the Shire of Hartshorn-dale traveled to the Ealdormere War Practice event this weekend past. He did so to graciously host the Games Guild tents at the event. One of the many things he did was run a day of tourneys on Sunday. Points were awarded for wins and for games played. We are pleased to announce the top seven players, their prizes and the donors of the prizes:

In first place, Stephen Scrymgeour, who won fabric donated by Freya.

Second, Jennifer of Ardchreag, who won a combination backgammon/checkerboard set donated by Lady Iolanda de Albornoz.

Third, Piero di Paxiti da Vincenza, who won a knucklebone set donated by Iolanda de Albornoz.

Fourth, Beth (mundanely of Mississauga), who won a woman's shirt donated by A Step Aside.

Fifth, Thorfinna gra'feldr, who won a nine-man-morris set donated by Fettered Cock Pewters.

Sixth, Serion d’Ivri, who won a glic set donated by Iolanda de Albornoz.

And seventh, Wulfgang Donnerfaust, who won a rune set donated by Ivy Keep.

Correction

When reporting the names of the new Lords and Ladies recognized by the Crown at Kingdom Court one name was accidentally left off our list. Congratulations to Lady Corrina von Rensealer, of the Canton of Greenhithe, for receiving her Award of Arms.

It was also announced that during Septentrian Court four people swore to the Iron Companions. They were: Baroness Gaerwen of Trafford (archery), Lady Robyn O’Connor (archery and thrown weapons), Lord Yvon de Bois (armoured combat) and Lord Agustyn of Thule (archery).

Rain Can’t Dampen Singing Spirit

A religious debate exploded on Sunday afternoon between early period and late period personas. During a terrible downpour that battered tents and made the sky turn yellow, Lord Thorulfr smithr and Lady Rosalia dei Querini quarrelled over the source of the storm. Thorulfr was convinced that Thor was showing his power by trying to flood the event site, while Rosalia asked God to forgive her pagan companion's heathen beliefs. Some folk muttered that Sir Sarnac Ba'adur had said "AElthelmarc" again. This could not be confirmed, but his squire, Herr Wulfgang Donnerfaust, had been heard mentioning that kingdom's name. Some things are genetic, and it would appear that the father has passed this peculiar gift down to his son.

Whatever the cause, there was rain. A lot of rain. To be blunt, we got soaked. However, the storm was short lived and the sandy soil quickly slurped up all the rain and puddles were scarce. A rainbow burned through the clouds, one end of it rising from the tent of thegn Cynred Broccan. When a group of us ran over and demanded his gold he told us he was a gnome, not a leprechaun.

Their Excellencies Septentria returned from off site looking very dry. Lord Brandt das Lederwerker therefore gave Her Excellency Domhnail a bear hug to share the gift of being damp. When I spread my arms and approached Baron Corwyn he stuck out his arm to hold me back, but did not see Brandt who caught him from behind.

People asked if the bardic circle would still occur, and seemed eager for it to do so. Therefore work crews were set out to gather all available shades and bring them to the Galbraith encampment, which had been vacated earlier that morning. The shades were set in a semi-circle and three fires were lit. (Luckily the wood had been stored in a trailer and was dry.) As the sun sank the bards began to sing and the circle lasted well into the morning. I know it was still going when I finally succombed to sleep at 2:30 am.

I know of at least three tokens given during the circle. The first was given to THL Eleanor Fairchild of Ansteorra (that's Texas, y'all) by Dame Tsivia bas Tamara v'Amberview. The second was given by Eleanor to THL Gwerydd verch Rhys, which consisted of three flavours of American Mountain Dew (can you say caffeine?). The third was a ring passed to Lady Thorfinna gra'feldr by Lady Emer Nic Aidan (which had originally been given to her by Lord Ivhon Thorne).

There were songs, stories and poems performed by various bards from about the known world. (We had visitors from AEthelmarc, the East, Calontir, Ansteorra and Northshield attending EWP.) However, I think my favourite moment of the night was Master Garraed Galbraith singing his song "Sons of the Dragon" which praised Calontir, Ealdormere and Northshield, all children of the Middle Kingdom. (The Principality of Northshield has recently voted to move to kingdom status and is moving through the process.) Lord Rhodri from Calontir was called on to perform many times, and Master Owen Alun pleased the crowd with renditions of "Doom and Gloom" and his Beowulf song ("He was hairy, he was scary, he was very, very tall...").

Armoured Combat Tournament Winners

Being that the event was a practice for war, there were many fighting activates during the weekend. Fencers fenced, archers arched and throwers threw.

Upon the armoured combat lists there was an unbelted practice and a barony versus non-barony melee.

There was also a Royal Tournament and a Newbies Tournament. The winner of the Royal Tournament was Sir Aaron Preslee Worgansson, while Donovan of House De Taahe was undefeated in the newbie's tourney. Thorfinn of House Blacksword came in second place in the newbie’s tournament..

Ealdormere Musters its Forces again for TRMs

Once again a military muster/review was held where the military might of the kingdom draws itself up into ranks to display themselves to their majesties. The Barony of Ramshaven, the Barony of Skraeling Althing, the Custo Regius and House De Taahe all had representatives upon the field, but most impressive of all was the Barony of Septentria. Due in large part to the inclusion of House Hrogn, House Galbraith and the Iron Companions, Septentria was a sea of scarlet upon the fighting field numbering into the dozens. Almost every free hand either carried an emblazoned shield or a banner and Septentria's argent bear was displayed proudly by her fighters. Their Majesties Edouard and Genevieve, and Her Highness Sussannah, addressed the troops and were answered by cries of Wassail. The king then called for a Wassail to Ealdormere and the trees shook with shooting.

The muster was planned and executed by Her Grace, Duchess Eanor of Amberhall.

Event Report: Ealdormere War Practice 3, July 2001

By THLaird Colyne Stewart

Every event that Thorfinna and I have been to has been better than the last, and EWP has to date been the best of them all.

Eirik Andersen did a masterful job of organizing the event and assembling a crack team to assist him (consisting primarily of Lachlan MacLean on Troll, Fursto as Chiurgeon, Melchior as head grunt, Eanor of Amberhall as the Parking Enforcer, Crispinus Spellar as Deputy Sheriff, and other Creaggers who were always willing to lend a hand whenever it was needed).

As some of you may have heard, a certain member of our Canton was induced to put on a dress and cavort about the Ardchreag campfire, going so far as to give yours truly a lap dance. This brazen hussy even offered such a dance to Theign Cynred when he
came to visit. I will neglect to mention this individual's name, though that likely won't save him from notoriety. As he said, when he was walking back from the Rusty Tankard the next morning, he heard a passerby point him out to his companion, saying, "I hear that guy looks great in a dress." This is untrue, though. He did not.

Our very own Marian of Heatherdale was put on vigil at a spontaneous court, as they had to grab her during the hour she spent at the event. She is being (now has been) Laurelled for her research into Arthurian Legend. This I unfortunately missed by a few
minutes, though Crispinus was on hand and got some photographs. Helen of Greyfells was also put on vigil.

Baroness Gaerwen became Authorized as a level 2 scout, dodging about the fighters and gleaning Cynred's arrows as he dropped fighter after fighter.

Though we all had a good time, the weather seemed to conspire against us. On Friday we baked, on Saturday we were drenched, and on Sunday we were buffeted by
freezing wind. (Monday, of course, was perfect weather, just in time for Tear Down). In fact, the wind on Sunday was so strong it blew our sunshade free. Not from its pegs, which were still securely driven into the ground, but right out of its feet and
flipped upside down.

The rain on Saturday did not stop the House Galbraith Birthday Bash, which went off almost without a hitch. Mead flowed as free as the rain, the Templars were tossed and a good time was had by all. The children's piñata (in the shape of a knight) was
broken the next day. The piñata’s creator danced him about, refusing to accept blows ("That was only a glance!"), until Brandt's son Lance stepped up and cracked him soundly across the neck (he was not wearing a gorget) and severed said neck, sending a
spray of candy flying thorough the air and leaving a head dangling from a string, dripping bits of wrapper.

On Sunday night, Master Hector stopped by the Ardchreag encampment and read to us the history of the Royal Line, all the way back to the very first King of the West, passing around a bottle of Scotch Whiskey for the listeners to enjoy. A Bardic circle began
to form up around him, growing to the point where the circle had to move out onto the open field. The circle went late into the night as stories were told and songs were sung.

Kingdom and Baronial Moots were held on Sunday, within view of archers cursing the wind, and fighters thankful for it (though Brandt was almost lifted into the air as the wind caught his war door).

Also on Sunday, a memorial service was held for Ulrich von der See, of beloved memory. The service was held where the List Field met the archery range, resided over by the Baron and Baroness, who were in full regalia. The members of Ardchreag and Greenhithe lined up to either side, with the Baron at one end, and Master Hector at the other. Everyone spoke of their fond memories of Markus, of his projects, his songs, his humour, his self sacrifice, and Hector quoted from one of Marian of Heatherdale's songs.
Fursto had a vial of Markus' ashes which she then spread over the field. Charles, the new Seneschal of Eoforwic, whispered, "I knew there was a reason for the wind." Cynred and Hector began to clash their weapons together as several people called out
Ulrich's name. It was a very moving ceremony.
